The Portable Ultrasound Reimbursement Equality (PURE) Act is about fairness—and access to care for the people who need it most.
Right now, providers who travel to a patient’s home or care facility receive a trip charge based on a law written in 1967. That law includes “other diagnostic studies,” but Medicare does not recognize ultrasound under that language. As a result, portable ultrasound providers are not reimbursed for travel.
What does this mean for your loved ones?
It means delayed care and treatment, regardless of age or condition. Small healthcare providers like us often cannot afford to continue offering mobile ultrasound services without proper reimbursement. Every day, we provide these services at a financial loss—because we care.
Without change, Medicare is effectively asking families to take on the burden of transporting patients—many of whom are elderly, immobile, or critically ill—to outside facilities.
By supporting the PURE Act, Congress can:
• Expand access to timely, in-home diagnostic care
• Allow small healthcare providers to sustainably serve patients
• Support fair wages for ultrasound technologists, comparable to hospital-based roles
• Reduce unnecessary delays in diagnosis and treatment
