She followed a woman with HIV in rural India and ended up raising $72 million for women’s causes globally. And she keeps bees. And makes candles. And has an MBA. And a medical degree. 🐝

This week Augustine sits down with — one of the most brilliant, multi-passionate humans to ever come on this podcast — for a conversation about women’s health, nonprofit fundraising, the psychology of giving, and why the problem with your nonprofit might just be you.

If you’ve ever run a birth business, founded a nonprofit, or wondered why asking for money feels like begging — this episode is going to shift something for you. 🎙️

I get really sick of this narrative.
I do not care about your intent when I am in pain or grieving.

“The system” does not dismiss people.
People do.

The system is made up of individuals who make choices every day.
So yes, the system needs to change.
And you still need to do better as a person within it.

One in five.

That’s how many new and expecting parents experience a perinatal mental health condition.

And yet so many people don’t know what they’re feeling, where to turn, or even have the language for what’s happening.

One thing I keep noticing is how often the word postpartum is incorrectly used interchangeably with postpartum depression in media and conversation.

They are not the same thing.

Postpartum simply means the period after birth.

Postpartum depression is one type of Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorder (PMAD), and while PMADs are common, they deserve care, support, treatment, and understanding.

This Maternal Mental Health Month, I’m joining the campaign with and to help bring more awareness, clarity, and compassion to these conversations.

When we connect the dots between the statistics and the stories, we help people feel less alone.

Wasn’t expecting to cry about this but here we are.

The Cliff Notes - https://stemcell.ucsf.edu/news/why-does-female-fertility-decline-so-fast-the-key-is-the-ovary

You are not a person with a microbiome; in some profound and unsettling way, you are more like a community that walks around thinking it is a person.

This is why I developed the Language of Living Systems.

The isolation (yeah the kind that makes you white-knuckle through everything alone) that has been conditioned into you from birth as a personal virtue is finally being revealed by research as a physiological event with consequences.

We’ve all got a form of the isolation narrative, especially Americans, in the culture of the United States it’s almost anti viral to revolt against individualist programming.

Think about it: the strong woman who doesn’t need anyone, the mother who handles it…the women we exhaust ourselves becoming.

We celebrate slowly killing ourselves with isolation, and perform as if the infrastructures we adhere to in culture aren’t slowly killing us; our lives a carefully constructed facade of performative “look what I can do” cards.

The community you live inside of is not just a lifestyle preference. It is your biological input. And your fertility…

Around here…drawing vulvas is pretty normal 😅

Consistency is key and revision…essential! Sometimes we do this by grabbing a pen and drawing our body anatomy together while we revise the different parts.

There is always lots of laughing. Lots of yelling out answers!! Lots of “WAIT…I KNOW THIS ONE!” 😂

But underneath all the fun is something really important…

Our young people are learning about their bodies in ways that feel relaxed, safe, engaging, and free from shame.

And honestly…they absolutely nail it.

Could you?

Breech will find its way into your practice. Will you be ready?
Breech presentations occur in 3–4% of term pregnancies. And up to 35% go undetected until labor. That means no matter how thorough your palpations, no matter how often you scan — breech will find its way into your practice. It’s not a matter of if. It’s a matter of when.
Our course Emergency Breech Birth — a 4-CEU workshop adapted from a live seminar, designed to make sure that when this moment comes, you’re not scrambling.
