Here's a simple Fall Prevention Month challenge:
Take a 5-minute walk through your parent's home—but walk it from their perspective.
Start at the front door. Walk to their favorite chair. Go into the bathroom. Walk into the bedroom.
Then ask them to show you how they get to the bathroom in the middle of the night.
Look for the obvious things like loose rugs, poor lighting, clutter and slippery surfaces.
But also watch them.
Are they holding onto furniture? Struggling to stand from their chair? Forgetting their walker? Hesitating at steps? Moving differently than they did six months ago?
Fall prevention isn't necessarily about making huge changes or taking away someone's independence.
Sometimes it's noticing the little things early enough to make a difference.
