Bioidentical hormones are not all FDA approved. In fact, the compounded Bioidentical hormones probably never will be FDA approved because of what makes them appealing to people. It seems like very personalized care, but there is no way to research people’s responses to these compounded hormones because everyone is on different doses/regimens/etc. It is nice that these options are available for people who cannot tolerate the other types of hormone replacement therapies, but this would not be my first choice. These compounded options are not safer or “more natural” and the North American Menopause Society caution against using them. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. That said, I think there would be almost no market for the compounded hormones if women were able to readily and easily access hormone replacement therapy for perimenopause. Clearly, we have a long way to go when it comes to addressing women’s health and I certainly appreciate women advocating for themselves to get the care and support they need! One of the routes of accessing care my patients have had luck with is Gennev.
