That voice telling you, “You’re coddling them” may not actually be your voice.

If you were raised by emotionally immature parents, you may have learned that emotional support is “too much” simply because your caregivers were uncomfortable with emotions.

But comforting your child does not spoil them. It teaches them that emotions are safe, relationships are safe, and they do not have to navigate hard feelings alone.

Try this:

1. Ask, “Whose voice is this?”
2. Remember that validation is not the same as permissiveness.
3. Practice responding to emotions instead of shutting them down.

You can break the cycle without becoming permissive.

This one might sting a little, so read it with care.

Sometimes we get so focused on proving we are supportive that we forget to ask whether our support is actually reaching the person we love.

Support is not just effort. It is impact, curiosity, repair, and learning what care feels like to the person receiving it.

If you have a question about parenthood, relationships, family dynamics, or building a We Family, send it to my DMs. I answer real questions in my newsletter, and you’ll always stay anonymous 🤍

Sometimes growth requires us to stop asking, “Am I better than them?” and start asking, “What happens to people when they experience me?” You can have good intentions, know your own pain, and still leave wounds on people you love. Healing is not just understanding why you became who you are. It is becoming honest enough to notice when your pain is shaping the way you treat others and humble enough to change it. The goal is not to become a person who never gets it wrong. It is to become someone who can listen, take accountability, repair, and respond to the people in front of you instead of letting old wounds make every decision.

How do you define “in sickness and in health”? I recently heard a podcast debate whether a person whose partner is battling cancer should be allowed to have their sexual needs met by someone else. And while intimacy is an important part of many relationships, and some relationships are intentionally nontraditional, I keep thinking about the person fighting for their life and the fear that can come with wondering if they are going to lose their partner while they are already losing so much. Hard seasons can expose the foundation of a relationship in ways we never anticipate, and many relationships struggle to survive illness, grief, infertility, disability, financial hardship, and other life-altering circumstances.

This also made me think about the difference between a “me” family and a “we” family. A me family may approach a crisis by asking, “How do I get my needs met?” while a we family may be more likely to ask, “How do we navigate this together while still making sure both of our needs matter?” Neither relationship is automatically right or wrong, especially when couples have different agreements about intimacy, but I think these conversations are worth having BEFORE the crisis happens. So I want to hear from you: What does “in sickness and in health” mean to you, and where do you draw the line?

Maybe the world would be a little better if we were all more self-centered. Not selfish. Self-aware. Imagine if we spent less time analyzing how everyone else is showing up and more time asking ourselves: What are my triggers? What am I bringing into this interaction? What do I need? Have I communicated that need? How might my behavior be impacting the people I care about? Self-reflection isn’t about taking responsibility for everything that happens to you. It’s about taking responsibility for the parts that belong to you.

The goal isn’t to become a “better person” because you’re bad now. It’s to become more aware so you can show up in ways that create healthier relationships, more honest communication, and more connection. Sometimes the most loving thing you can do for your relationships is turn your attention back toward yourself.

If you grew up loved, supported, and emotionally safe, you may not fully understand what it is like to grow up being hurt by the very people who were supposed to protect you. That does not mean you cannot understand. It means you have to be willing to listen without critiquing someone’s experience through the lens of your own. What felt “normal” in your family may have been deeply unsafe in someone else’s. Empathy asks us to expand our understanding beyond what we personally experienced.

And if you grew up unloved, neglected, criticized, or hurt by your parents, I want you to know that your experience does not become less valid because someone else had a loving family. You deserved to be protected, believed, and loved well. This is also what expanding a “we family” can look like: realizing that our responsibility to care for one another does not end with the people we share blood with. Our we family can extend into our community, creating space for people whose families did not give them the safety, love, or belonging they deserved.

EMDR certification taught me the model. The clients taught me how human the work really is.

There is so much pressure in the beginning to get every piece “right.” The cognition, the pacing, the script, the SUDS, the target, the next prompt. And those things do matter.

What I have learned over time is that the protocol is not a replacement for attunement. It is a container. The real work still asks us to notice, adapt, slow down, trust the process, and stay connected to the person in front of us.

If you are an EMDR therapist or clinician wanting more support around this work, send me a DM about clinical supervision. And we can chat more if it's the right fit for you!

Sometimes I genuinely don’t believe I could work harder than my clients. Not because they are doing everything they can to “get better,” but because some of them are using every ounce of energy they have just to get through the day. They are taking care of the kids, going to work, managing the house, showing up for everyone else, and somehow still expecting themselves to have enough energy left over to heal. Therapy asks you to do something different: to slow down, feel what you have learned to survive, and sometimes stop using the very coping strategies that helped you keep functioning. That is HARD.

Some people may not be ready for therapy, and that is okay. But I refuse to assume that a client is not trying simply because they are not prioritizing their healing. Sometimes they have spent so long prioritizing everyone and everything else that they genuinely do not know how to prioritize themselves. You are not lazy for struggling to heal when you are exhausted from surviving. And you do not have to prove that you are struggling “enough” to deserve support.

Some trauma responses are easy to miss because they look so normal from the outside.

Being prepared. Being calm. Being flexible. Being helpful. Being the person who “doesn’t need much.”

And then one day you realize how much of your life has been built around staying safe, avoiding disappointment, and making sure nothing gets too unpredictable.

This is speaking to a very specific population of people. You know who you are. You weren’t necessarily “unbelievable.” Sometimes people heard you and simply didn’t want to believe you because accepting your truth would have required them to confront something they were invested in denying. So you spent years questioning yourself, gaslighting yourself, and carrying shame, blame, and guilt that were never yours. But their refusal to accept reality did not make your reality less real. The truth was always the truth. You can stop protecting the fake reality they protected and start releasing what was never yours to carry.
