Before amputation is considered, blood flow needs to be part of the conversation.

For patients with PAD, revascularization may help restore circulation when arteries are narrowed or blocked. This matters because PAD management is not only about saving a limb. It can also affect mobility, independence, quality of life, and long-term survival.

Reports show that among matched patients with PAD, four-year survival was about 40% after revascularization compared to about 23% after primary amputation, with median survival increasing from 1.3 years to 2.9 years.

A simple circulation test can make a major difference.

ABI testing helps screen for peripheral arterial disease by comparing blood pressure in the ankle and arm.

This kind of early testing is part of a bigger mission: helping patients protect their feet, their mobility, and their quality of life.

Before removing an ankle mass, it's important to carefully map the nerves, arteries, and veins around the area to help protect the patient and avoid unnecessary complications.

This level of detail helps guide a safer approach, a cleaner incision, and a better path to recovery.

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a circulation problem that can affect how far you walk, how well wounds heal, and whether your feet are getting the blood flow they need to stay healthy.

The concern is that PAD can be missed until it becomes serious. For some patients, the warning signs may be subtle: tired legs, cramping, cold feet, slow-healing wounds, or changes in the skin.

At Ankle & Foot Center of Central Florida, we take an amputation-prevention approach by identifying circulation issues early. Through in-house testing like ABI, the team can help identify blood-flow concerns and guide patients toward the right next steps before symptoms become limb-threatening.

Foot pain, slow healing, or circulation concerns? Don’t wait. Schedule an appointment and let’s take a closer look!
