Why does connection sometimes feel so urgent?
For many people, that urgency isn’t about the present relationship.
It’s about a younger part that once needed attunement and didn’t receive it.
When emotional attunement is missing in childhood, the body learns something simple and terrifying:
being seen equals safety.
That belief doesn’t disappear with age.
It follows us into adult relationships, where partners can unconsciously become stand-ins for parents—and old fears get activated when attunement breaks.
This isn’t “neediness.”
It’s an exile still trying to survive.
I wrote about how this urgency forms, how protectors try to manage it, and how self-attunement slowly changes the pattern.
