Shop local!
Some weeks remind you just how much heart, faith, patience and determination it takes to keep a little shop going. And goodness, this was one of those weeks.
Our sweet little Picket Fence has been put through it.
We had our A/C guy here for several days, and we are so incredibly thankful for every one of you who still came through the doors and attempted to shop with us in the heat. You smiled, you encouraged us, and some of you stayed and shopped even when it was downright uncomfortable. That kindness did not go unnoticed.
Then came the great missing freezer fiasco. A commercial freezer we had saved for, planned for and waited weeks to receive was delivered to someone else and disappeared. We will finally get our money refunded, but unfortunately, it will still be about three weeks before those funds are returned to us.
And because apparently that wasn’t enough excitement for one week, we also had to ask a small group of people to leave the shop for shoplifting. That one hurts in a different way. We work incredibly hard to fill this little store with products made by our family and by other hardworking local families and small businesses. Please know that we do have cameras, theft is reported, and we will prosecute. Protecting our shop also means protecting every maker whose products sit on these shelves.
But in the middle of all that chaos, something beautiful is happening too.
Our little old shop is getting a fresh coat of paint! She is already looking so much better, and watching her slowly come back to life has been such a bright spot in a very challenging week. There is something special about an old building getting a little love and another chapter added to her story.
And to those of you who have noticed all the changes we’ve been making inside and out, thank you. Truly. Every new product, rearranged display, fresh coat of paint and little improvement represents hours of work and a tremendous amount of love and investment.
We have so much invested in this little shop, and so do all of the wonderful local makers, bakers, farmers, ranchers and small businesses represented here. When you shop with us, your dollars reach far beyond our front door.
As we head toward the holidays, we are choosing to look forward with gratitude and excitement. Behind the scenes, everyone is BUSY creating, baking, making and preparing some wonderful things for you.
Freshly baked goods. Beautiful imported European chocolates. Italian specialty foods. Coffee and teas. Texas-made gifts. Local foods. Thoughtful hostess gifts. Stocking stuffers. Candles and room sprays. Vintage finds and holiday decor. Apparel and accessories. Holiday treats. And so many special things we cannot wait to show you.
After this week, we could certainly use a little extra positivity, a few prayers and, most of all, your continued support. Come see us. Bring a friend. Tell someone about our little shop. Share a post. Pick up a treat. Shop one of our local makers. Every single bit of it matters more than you probably realize.
Small shops aren’t built by big corporations or endless bank accounts. They’re built one customer, one maker, one long day, one hard week and one hopeful tomorrow at a time.
Thank you for continuing to believe in this sweet little place with us.
Here’s to a fresh coat of paint, cooler days, better weeks and what we hope will be a truly beautiful holiday season at The Picket Fence.
We can’t wait to show you what’s coming. Stay tuned. Please share with your friends and let them know about us! 🤍
