A little change of plans for our September Parenting Through Loss meeting. šŸ¤

We were planning to continue our Conversations Before Crisis series this month with an attorney joining us to talk about wills, trusts, protecting our children, survivor benefits, and some of the questions that came out of our last few meetings.

That conversation is still coming. We’re just putting it on hold for a little bit.

Because sometimes supporting one another means sitting around a table and having the hard conversations…

and sometimes it means getting up, getting active, and walking beside each other.

One of our own PTL families has been personally impacted by ovarian cancer, and the Run Teal: There’s a Cure 5K falls on the same Saturday as our September meeting.

So we’re changing things up. šŸ’™

On Saturday, September 19, instead of our regular meeting at the Southwest Center, Parenting Through Loss will be participating in the Run Teal 5K at Spring Lake Park.

And we want our PTL families there with us! Parenting Through Loss will help with registration costs for our members who would like to participate. If you need registration assistance, simply message us here on Facebook or email [email protected].

You don’t have to be a runner. Walk it. Run it. Take your time. The point isn’t how fast we finish. The point is that we show up.

This organization was created so we don’t have to navigate this life alone, and I can’t think of a better way to spend our September meeting than showing one of our own that we’re right here with them.

Conversations Before Crisis will continue. But for September, it’s our time to support one another while getting active together. šŸ¤

We’re one week away! šŸ¤

Next Saturday, Parenting Through Loss is continuing our Conversations Before Crisis discussion.

Last month opened the door to SO many good questions, so this month we’re keeping it going with a more relaxed, open conversation. Come with your questions, share what you’ve learned, and I’ll be sharing more from my own experience and some of the things I wish I had known before I needed to know them.

And a quick update: I know I told y’all we were hoping to have an attorney join us this month. We decided to push that conversation to September so we can give it the time and attention it deserves. So yee, it’s still coming! We’ll be able to dig deeper into wills, trusts, protecting our children, and the legal side of preparing for the unexpected.

But first, we’re continuing the conversation next Saturday!

Saturday’s Parenting Through Loss meeting was one of my favorites we’ve had. Truly!

We talked about something that most of us don’t like to think about, but after living through loss, I know just how important it is.

I kept repeating one phrase throughout the meeting:

Conversations before crisis.

I asked everyone one simple question:

ā€œIf something happened to you tomorrow, what are the first three things someone would need to know?ā€.

Within minutes, our board was covered with sticky notes. Children’s routines. Medical history. Insurance policies. Passwords. Bills. Emergency contacts. So many things that we often assume we’ll ā€œget to someday.ā€

Before everyone left, they each took home a folder and a checklist to begin organizing their important information. It wasn’t about leaving with everything finished. It was about leaving with a plan.

My favorite part was hearing people say, ā€œI’m going home to work on this today.ā€

That right there is why we have these meetings.

Parenting Through Loss will always be a place to talk about grief, but it’s also a place where we can learn from one another and help make life just a little easier for the people we love.

Thank you to everyone who showed up, participated, and was willing to have these conversations. I truly believe every parent—not just those who have experienced loss—could benefit from having these conversations before crisis. šŸ¤

What if I told you this month’s Parenting Through Loss meeting has nothing to do with ā€œgetting overā€ grief… and everything to do with protecting the people you love most?

This Saturday, we’re talking about something I wish someone had talked to me about years ago.

It’s practical.
It’s important.
And it’s a conversation every parent should have-- but almost nobody does.

If you’re raising children after the loss of a co-parent or spouse, I hope you’ll join us.

Loss doesn’t send a warning.

One day my life felt so familiar… so routine. The next, I was trying to figure out how to survive something that I never saw coming.

I know you know this feeling too.

And somehow, while you… we… were learning how to carry our own grief, we also had/have to help our children carry theirs.

You don’t get to pause life.

The bills still come.
The laundry still needs to be done.
The appointments still happen.
The meals still have to be cooked.
The bedtime routines still have to be kept.

Because as unfair as it feels, life doesn’t stop.

That’s why grief is so complex.

It’s not just about missing someone. It’s about learning how to keep living while carrying the weight of their absence every single day.

If you’re walking this road, I hope you know this:

You don’t have to have it all figured out. One day at a time is enough 🩷

Happy Father’s Day to all of the daddies- those that are present, those that are missed, and those that are immensely loved 🩵

Father’s Day can be complicated when someone is missing and we are holding space for all of the ways in which this day holds meaning.

We honor the fathers who may no longer be here physically but whose love continues to live on through their children.

We honor the memories, the stories, the lessons, and the impact they continue to have on the lives of those who love them.

Thinking of all of our Parenting Through Loss families today. šŸ¤

A personal message and reflection:

Six years ago today, my life changed forever.

Sometimes in life, you’re dealt cards you never expected to be dealt. You don’t know what hand to play. You don’t know what comes next. You’re just trying to survive something you never saw coming.

That’s what a lot of these past six years have felt like.

There have been highs and lows, victories and setbacks, more tears than I could ever count, and lessons I never asked to learn.

I can’t say I would have chosen this journey. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

For a long time, I was just trying to figure out how to put one foot in front of the other while raising a little boy who deserved the very best of me, even on the days when I felt completely broken.

Somehow, day by day, year by year, we kept going.

And somewhere along the way, the seed for Parenting Through Loss was planted.

Not because I had all the answers.

Not because I had it all figured out.

But because I knew what it felt like to need a community. To need people who understood. To need a place where I didn’t have to carry the wild questions that would only make sense to us.

Today marks six years since my son’s dad passed away.

As I reflect on these six years, I don’t just think about what was lost. I think about what was built. The people who showed up. The family and friends who carried us when we couldn’t carry ourselves. The lessons learned. The strength I didn’t know I had. The community that grew from one of the hardest tragedies of our life.

I still miss him.

I still wish things had been different.

But I’ve learned that grief and gratitude can exist in the same space.

I’ve learned that loss can leave a mark on your life without defining your entire life.

And I’ve learned that healing isn’t about leaving our loved ones behind. It’s about learning how to carry their memory with us while continuing to live.

Today, I will watch my son ride his horse in the Juneteenth parade, knowing his daddy would be proud.

And I hope you do something for yourself today, too. šŸ¤

One thing we’ve talked about a lot in Parenting Through Loss is the importance of caring for ourselves, not just our children.

Sometimes that means asking for help.

Some times that means setting boundaries.

And some times, like this month, that means making space for joy.

As much as I love our monthly meetings, Parenting Through Loss will not meet in June. I’ll be taking some time to celebrate my birthday, another year of life, and all that this journey has taught me.

June 20th also marks six years since my son’s dad passed away.

For a long time, I couldn’t imagine what life would look like this far down the road. This year, I’m choosing to honor his memory while also making space for movement, community, gratitude, and life.

Because one thing I’ve learned is that grief and joy can exist at the same time.

Healing isn’t about leaving our loved ones behind. It’s about learning how to carry their memory with us while continuing to live.

We’ll be back together on July 18th, and I can’t wait to see everyone then. šŸ¤
