Birth Plan? More like Birth Prepared.

Some birth plans are followed closely, but most of the time, birth doesn't go exactly as planned.

So instead of creating a birth plan filled with expectations to be followed down to the fairy lights, create one centered around your care preferences.

What matters most to you? What choices would you prefer in different situations? What are your goals for your birth?

Once you have your care preferences in order, work backward to create action steps that can help you prepare and work toward those goals.

Because you can't plan every detail of birth, but you can prepare for it.

Less focused on a perfect plan. More focused on being birth prepared.

Remember..
No matter what happens during labor and birth, God is with you.
Take peace in knowing that He is sovereign, He is good, and nothing that happens is outside of His care.

God’s design is incredible, and how He designed pregnancy and birth is no exception.

During pregnancy, your body literally grows a temporary organ to help nourish and support your baby: the placenta.

The placenta:
• Produces hormones that support pregnancy
• Acts as a trading post between mom and baby
• Transfers oxygen and nutrients from mom to baby
• Transfers waste products from baby back to mom
• Does all of this while keeping mom’s and baby’s blood separate

And then there’s the umbilical cord, the lifeline connecting the baby to the placenta. It contains three blood vessels: two arteries and one vein.

Although Ecclesiastes 4:12 is often referenced in the context of marriage, whenever I think about the umbilical cord and the three blood vessels within it, I’m reminded of this verse:

“And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him, a threefold cord is not quickly broken.”
Ecclesiastes 4:12 ESV

God’s design is intentional, intricate, and truly incredible. 🤍

Every child is a blessing and planned by the Lord. Not every blessing is easy.

The Promised Land was a blessing for the Israelites, but it came with obedience and work on their part.

The blessing of childbirth often comes with work, with preparation, with seeking His guidance.

That's what preparing for birth is: stewarding what the Lord has placed in your hands to fully receive the blessing He has prepared for you. Wherever you are in that process today, you're not behind.

And also, there is so much grace on your journey. It's not perfection or legalism; it's doing our best to steward what we've been given.

You see those two pink lines… Who do you tell? 🩷

Do you tell your spouse?
Your parents?
Extended family?
Your closest friends?
The whole world?

Who you tell, and when you tell them, is completely up to you.

There’s a common rule of thumb to wait until you’ve entered your second trimester to announce a pregnancy, largely because the risk of miscarriage decreases as pregnancy progresses.

I’m not here to tell you what you should do or who you should tell. But I want to share my husband’s and my thought process.

We chose to tell our family and a few close friends who are like family almost immediately after seeing those two pink lines.

Our thought was simple: if we experienced a miscarriage, we would want our family and close friends to know so we wouldn’t have to mourn that loss alone.

There’s no right or wrong answer here. Your pregnancy is yours to share in your own timing.
But I do want to encourage you to consider telling at least one trusted person outside of your spouse.

Because if a miscarriage does happen, relying solely on your spouse for support while they are also grieving can be really challenging.

Sometimes, having another safe person who already knows can make a difficult season a little less lonely. 🤍

Tell people when you’re ready, but don’t feel like you have to carry it alone.

Something I didn’t get to share earlier this year was the opportunity to make placenta prints for a sweet friend.

What an honor it was to be invited into such a special part of her birth story and to create a keepsake she can treasure for years to come.

I’m so grateful for the trust and the opportunity to celebrate the beauty of birth in this way.

Many worthwhile things in life are hard, but hard doesn’t equal bad.

Often, it’s in the hardest moments that the Lord is teaching us, speaking to us, and refining us.

The same can be true of labor.

Labor can be hard. It can be intense. It can stretch you in ways you never expected. But just because it's hard doesn't mean God can't help you through it.

Don’t let fear of the hard moments keep you from preparing for and pursuing the birth you desire.

Hard doesn’t equal bad. ❤️
