When you’ve known your patient for 16 years…

Electroacupuncture for glute medius pain ⚡️

This patient was having pain around the outside of the hip, especially when getting out of the car. Here I’m using electroacupuncture on the gluteus medius to help reduce muscle tension, improve local circulation, and calm irritated pain pathways.

The glute med plays a major role in stabilizing the pelvis and hip, so when it gets overloaded or irritated, everyday movements like walking, stairs, or getting in and out of a car can become surprisingly painful.

Acupuncturist reacts: Facial acupuncture is real… but it usually doesn’t look quite like THIS. 😂 Acupuncture can be used on the face for things like jaw tension, headaches, facial muscle dysfunction, and cosmetic treatments, but more needles doesn’t necessarily mean better results.

At some point, we’re just installing antennas.

Does your shoulder pinch when you reach into a high cabinet, put luggage overhead, or press weights at the gym?

The subscapularis is a deep rotator-cuff muscle that helps stabilize the shoulder during overhead movement. When an examination shows that it’s contributing to pain or restricted motion, targeted needling with gentle electrical stimulation may help reduce guarding and improve how the muscle is recruited. Treatment is always based on the individual.

The subscapularis is one of the four rotator cuff muscles. It sits on the front surface of the shoulder blade and helps internally rotate the arm while keeping the shoulder joint stable.

When it becomes tight or irritated, it can contribute to shoulder pain, limited range of motion, and discomfort reaching overhead or behind your back. Targeted manual therapy can help reduce muscle tension, improve mobility, and restore more comfortable shoulder movement.

This is a simple at-home technique using a towel or pillowcase to create gentle traction through the spine. Keep the pull light and comfortable, and stop if you feel pain, numbness, tingling, or dizziness.

Anmian literally means “Peaceful Sleep,” and it’s one of my favorite extra acupuncture points to teach for insomnia. 😴

It’s located just behind the ear, in the soft area between the mastoid bone and the base of the skull. In Chinese medicine, Anmian is traditionally used to calm the mind, settle restlessness, and support more restful sleep.

For a simple at-home version, use your fingertip to apply comfortable, steady pressure to the point on each side for about 30–60 seconds, or gently massage the area in small circles. Try it while lying in bed, paired with slow breathing, especially when your brain doesn’t seem ready to shut down for the night.

You don’t need to needle the point yourself. Gentle acupressure is the safer DIY option.

What we eat for breakfast can set the tone for how we feel throughout the day. These are some of the foods I regularly reach for to support a healthy inflammatory response which can lead to chronic pain:

🫐 Berries
🥣 Oatmeal
🌱 Chia and ground flaxseed
🥜 Walnuts
🥑 Avocado
🥬 Leafy greens
🍳 Eggs
🫒 Extra-virgin olive oil
🫚 Ginger and turmeric
🍵 Green tea

You don’t need a perfect diet. Just look for simple ways to add more protein, fiber, healthy fats, and colorful whole foods to your breakfast.

Acupuncturist reacts: Has anyone ever tried chiropractic facial release? I can even imagine how this must feel, but did you find it helpful???
