🚨 A new federal watchdog report says durable medical equipment remains a major vulnerability in Medicare. The HHS Office of Inspector General says criminals continue to exploit Medicare’s payment system through medically unnecessary or fraudulent equipment claims. DME fraud can involve braces, catheters and other medical equipment billed to the program. The watchdog says stronger data analysis, oversight and coordination are needed to identify suspicious claims and protect taxpayer funds.

🚨 A former owner of two Massachusetts telemedicine companies has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for his role in an alleged $110 million Medicare fraud scheme. Prosecutors say Michael Richardson and others used telemedicine companies to generate medically unnecessary orders for durable medical equipment, including braces. Richardson pleaded guilty in 2024 and was ordered to forfeit more than $3.4 million. The case highlights how telemedicine services can be exploited to generate fraudulent Medicare claims.

🚨 A Nevada doctor has been charged in an alleged $95 million Medicare fraud scheme involving medically unnecessary wound treatments for elderly patients. Federal prosecutors accuse 74-year-old Dr. Stephen Dubin of billing Medicare for expensive amniotic wound allografts that were allegedly applied without medical necessity. Prosecutors also allege that illegal kickbacks and rebates were involved and that Medicare paid more than $54 million on the claims. Dubin is accused of using proceeds from the alleged scheme to fund a lavish lifestyle, including multi-million-dollar yachts. The charges are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

🚨 New research is raising concerns about how medical AI systems interpret patient information. Researchers tested 47 medical AI models and found that certain prompts could cause the models to add demographic details that were never provided. In a smaller number of cases, those invented assumptions changed the medical recommendation. The study does not suggest that medical AI is inherently unsafe, but it highlights a potential reliability problem as these systems become more involved in healthcare decisions.

🚨 A federal appeals court has revived a $6.7 billion lawsuit against Bristol Myers Squibb over allegations that the drugmaker delayed FDA approvals for three drugs after its acquisition of Celgene. Former Celgene shareholders argue that delays affected payments they were entitled to under the deal. The company disputes the allegations, and the appeals court ruling does not establish liability—it allows the lawsuit to continue.

🚨 The Trump administration says some hospitals and healthcare providers improperly billed insurers for gender-related treatments provided to minors. According to a new HHS report, nearly $120 million in related services has been billed since 2019, with the agency alleging that some claims used diagnoses unrelated to gender dysphoria. The providers have not been found guilty of fraud, and some hospitals say they are reviewing the allegations. The cases have now been referred for further federal investigation.

🚨 The FDA has granted accelerated approval to Zenbexus (iberdomide), an oral treatment for certain adults with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma. It is used in combination with daratumumab and dexamethasone for patients who have received previous treatment. In the clinical trial supporting the approval, the Zenbexus combination produced a higher rate of minimal residual disease-negative complete responses than the comparison treatment. Because this is an accelerated approval, additional studies are required to confirm the treatment’s clinical benefit.

🚨 The FDA has approved Tauklarify, a new radioactive imaging agent that can help doctors identify tau neurofibrillary tangles in the brains of adults with cognitive impairment being evaluated for Alzheimer’s disease. The agent is used with PET imaging to help visualize tau buildup, one of the key biological features associated with Alzheimer’s. Tauklarify does not treat Alzheimer’s, and a scan result does not by itself confirm or rule out the disease. Instead, it gives doctors another tool for evaluating patients and understanding the underlying brain changes.

🚨 A federal watchdog says New York needs stronger oversight of Medicaid managed-care organizations after finding problems involving mental-health and substance-use treatment requirements. The audit focused on whether selected plans were following federal parity rules when using prior authorization. Prior authorization can affect whether treatment is approved before an insurer pays for it, making oversight especially important for patients seeking behavioral-health care. The findings do not represent a fraud conviction, but they raise questions about whether Medicaid patients are facing unnecessary barriers to treatment.

🚨 The FDA has approved Tudriqev, a genetically modified oncolytic virus, for certain adults with advanced melanoma whose cancer progressed after earlier treatment. The therapy is designed to attack tumors directly while also activating an immune response. The treatment is used with the immunotherapy drug nivolumab and represents another move toward targeted biological approaches in cancer care.
