Let’s debunk a common myth! 🍳 I can't begin to explain how often I hear people saying they don't eat eggs because of the cholesterol content. There are so many misconceptions out there in the media when it comes to this topic.
We used to be advised that in order to lower our cholesterol levels, we need to cut out all foods that contain cholesterol. Research has recently found this ideal to be completely false!
Most of the cholesterol in our bodies is synthesized by the liver. But, consuming dietary cholesterol, like in eggs, does not cause the liver to make more cholesterol. The liver works hard to maintain its balance of cholesterol production. So, when dietary cholesterol intake is increased, the body compensates, and the liver starts to produce less cholesterol.
Instead, the intake of the "bad" fats, like saturated fats and trans fat is what leads to increased cholesterol production by the liver.
What does this mean? Dietary cholesterol does not raise cholesterol levels - Saturated Fats and Trans Fats do!
And - 1 large egg only contains 1.5 grams of saturated fat! Eggs are one of the most nutritious foods on this planet. They are high in protein, essential fatty acids, and vitamins and minerals. 🥚🍳🥚🍳
