It’s back to school time!
Kids heal and bounce back quickly, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t subject to physical strain too. One form of strain for kids is a heavy backpack.
Kid’s spines are still developing up to age 8 and a heavy backpack can cause posture changes, strain, and pain.
Backpacks should only be up to 10 to 15% of a kid’s weight. For the average 8 year old, that means a backpack shouldn’t weight more than 8 pounds. Not much more than a water bottle and a couple of books.
To reduce this stress in your kid’s lives, make sure your kids use both straps on their backpack, utilize lockers at school, and if they consistently carry a heavy backpack, consider a rolling bag. And get their posture checked with an expert so they can continue to grow aligned and healthy.
