Budgeting skills 🛒🏡
Yesterday the crew from our Cherokee County Service Center in Columbus took on a real-world budgeting challenge in the community. Each person had a $600 "budget" to furnish a kitchen — everything from dishes and cookware to small appliances and storage — while practicing smart shopping and decision-making along the way. The only items they didn’t need to buy were a refrigerator and stove, but everything else was fair game. Each individual compared prices, prioritized needs vs. wants, and worked together to stretch their budgets.
Here's why this matters:
1. Building life skills: budgeting, planning, problem-solving, and making informed choices.
2. Growing confidence: hands-on experiences help individuals feel more prepared for independent living.
3. Community inclusion: learning happens best when people are actively participating in everyday community experiences.
We’re proud of the creativity, teamwork, and practical thinking everyone showed today. From finding the best deals to picking out kitchen essentials, this was learning in action. A special thank you to MEL Supply in Columbus!
