It’s my best friend’s 50th bday today.
A milestone that is worth celebrating, reflecting upon, and posting about.
Brian Lee, or B Lee as he is known, is 50 years old.
A few months ago, my daughter and I were going back and forth. She was making fun of me ( ).
On the topic of friends, Schmoops said, “Dad, you don’t have a lot of friends.”
I immediately thought of the line from the movie Tombstone.
You know the one, when the guy questions Doc Holliday, in his sickened state, on why he’d risk his life for Wyatt Earp in the duel with evil Johnny Ringo.
Holliday answered, “Because Wyatt Earp is my friend.”
Incredulous, the guy quips, “Hell, I got lots of friends.”
To which Holliday cooly delivers, “I don’t.”
and I have been best friends since January of 1991 – that’s 35 years.
This picture – one of my all-time favorites – was taken in 1993 when B Lee, myself, and Kevin Wooley walked out as team captains in our state championship game.
He would go on to have one of the best games of his life, playing both ways and on every special team, and scoring 2 TD in a 28-0 upset.
When you stop and think about it, our friendship shouldn’t have worked – he grew up a metal-head. I grew up on Jimmy Buffett.
He’s an early bird. I’m a night owl.
He has horrible taste in sports teams (e.g. everything Baahston) and I root for proper teams (Yankees, Giants, Rangers)
You get it.
Yet somehow, we make it work.
Probably because we both have similar views about the important stuff in life – family, how to treat people, and how to be a great teammate.
I believe he is the only person at Manasquan to win a state championship in football as both a player (2) and a coach (8) AND win a state championship in baseball as a coach.
In 2023, he was named the Shore Baseball Coaches Association’s Jake Landfried Assistant Coach of the Year.
In 2025, he was named Manasquan High School Teacher of the Year.
And I get to call him my best friend.
Today.
And every day.
Schmoops, you’re right. I don’t have many friends.
My wish for you is that you have at least one friend like Uncle Brian to call your own one day.
Happy 50th #22!
