It's been said, "there is nothing stronger than the heart of a volunteer".. To present criteria that allow for accurate determination of death in mountain rescue situations, the International Commission for Mountain Emergency Medicine convened a panel of mountain rescue doctors and a forensic pathologist. The recommendations are published in the December 2020 issue of Wilderness & Environmental Medicine [Determination of Death in Mountain Rescue: Recommendations of the International Commission for Mountain Emergency Medicine (ICAR MedCom); CME available for WMS members].

This article, along with the full issue, is now available online:

Important message here from Wilderness Medical Society experts about errors in thinking of COVID-19 lung injury as analogous to high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE).

(SIDE NOTE: It is important to remember that, although somewhat glossed over in the dialogue here, there do appear to be some cardiac injury features to COVID-19).

COVID-19 lung injury is NOT HAPE. An erroneous theory gained media attention in the past few weeks, positing a relationship between high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) and lung injury in COVID-19. A group of experts in high altitude medicine who are also caring for patients with COVID-19 correct this misconception; continued amplification of this message could have adverse effects on patient management so please help us spread the word. Information about why COVID-19 cannot be confused with or compared to treatment for high altitude pulmonary edema is available here: liebertpub.com/doi/10.1089/ham.2020.0055
