If you are nursing or pumping in warm weather, you’ve probably heard people say “just drink more water!”
Here is the truth: when you’re lactating—especially in the heat—drinking gallons of plain water can actually flush out essential minerals and leave you feeling more drained. ☀️💧
Your body uses a massive amount of fluid and minerals to make milk. When you add summer heat or warm days into the mix, simple H2O isn’t always enough. Your body needs electrolytes—specifically sodium, potassium, and magnesium—to actually absorb that hydration.
Here’s how I recommend staying genuinely hydrated:
🧂 1. Add Trace Minerals & Electrolytes
Adding an electrolyte packet or a pinch of unrefined sea salt with a squeeze of lemon to your water helps your body hold onto hydration rather than passing it right through. It’s more refreshing than it sounds, try it!
🍵 2. Nourishing Herbal Iced Teas
Botanicals like Red Raspberry Leaf, Nettle, and Hibiscus are rich in minerals and deeply restorative. Brew them warm, let them steep overnight, then pour over ice with a slice of citrus for a deeply hydrating, mineral-rich drink. Squeeze of honey or stevia if you like it sweet!
Taking care of your body during postpartum shouldn’t feel like a chore—it should feel like genuine replenishment. 🌿
