As we count down the days until Overdose Awareness Day, we will share a few of the loved ones who will be honored. Our Light the Way for Hope events will be a beautiful night honoring our loved ones who shine from above and the beautiful lives they lived.

This is Gage Barnhill. đź’ś

“My favorite person died. I thought it would kill me too. Turns out they taught me how to live so big I couldn't stop because they were gone. I had to go bigger so they could see it from the stars. Always sad, a little broken, but still here. Still living for them and for me.” 💜

Please join us as we celebrate Gage's life at our annual Overdose Awareness Day: Light the Way for Hope events. đź’ś

Thursday night at Mount Pleasant Town Hall was about more than lights. It was about the lives behind them. 🕯️💜

Hundreds of luminary bags lined the grounds during WakeUp Carolina’s Light the Way for Hope—each carrying a name, and every name carrying a story.

A son. A daughter. A mother. A father. A brother, sister, partner or friend.

People who were loved. People who mattered. People who are still deeply missed.

Throughout the evening, we watched families find their loved one’s name, kneel beside a luminary, share memories, hug one another and sometimes simply stand quietly. Those moments are why we gather.

We remember those we have lost to overdose. We stand beside the families who continue to carry that loss. And we remind those who are still struggling that recovery is possible, help is available, and there is always HOPE.

Thank you to the Town of Mount Pleasant, Mount Pleasant Police Department, Charleston Center, our community partners, volunteers, families, and everyone who showed up Thursday night. This is what community looks like. ❤️

We remember. We support. We educate. And together, we Light the Way for Hope. 🕯️

“Jordan was my youngest son, he had 18 months sober, was a welder, a sneaker head, and was living his best life. He repalsed and 3 weeks later he was gone from Fentanyl Poisoning.
There was no investigation done, just treated like he didn't matter.
He was loved by me, his brothers, and his nephews. He is deeply missed. ” 💜

Thursday evening at the Moncks Corner Farmers Market, our very own Elizabeth and Tanya had the honor of ringing the bell and sharing with the community about Light the Way for Hope.

Join us this Monday, August 31st at 7 PM at Unity Park in Moncks Corner as we come together to remember those we’ve lost to overdose, stand beside the families and friends who carry their memories, and remind those still struggling that there is always hope.

đź’ś Last night, our community showed what HOPE looks like.

Hundreds gathered for Light the Way for Hope in Mount Pleasant, but what stays with you afterward isn’t the size of the crowd or even the hundreds of luminaries glowing in the darkness.

It’s the names written on them.

Each name represents a life. Someone who was loved. Someone who belonged to a family, had friends, shared laughs, made memories, and left a space that can never truly be filled.

For one evening, we stood together and made sure those names were seen, spoken, and remembered.

There was grief. There were tears. But there was also connection, compassion, and an incredible amount of HOPE.

That’s what community is about—showing up for families who have experienced unimaginable loss while continuing to reach the people who are still struggling today.

Thank you to the Town of Mount Pleasant, Mount Pleasant Police Department, Charleston Center, our volunteers, community partners, and every person who stood with us.

We can’t change yesterday. But together, we can change someone’s tomorrow. 💜

Last night in Mount Pleasant, hundreds of people came together to Light the Way for Hope. đź’ś

But looking across that lawn, it wasn’t the number of luminary bags that hit the hardest.

It was the names.

Every bag carried a name. And every name carried a story.

Someone’s mother. Father. Son. Daughter. Brother. Sister. Spouse. Best friend. People who laughed, loved, struggled, dreamed, and mattered deeply to someone. Gone far too soon, but remembered for who they were—not for how they died.

The emotions were high. Tears flowed. Stories were shared. Families stood together. And surrounding all that grief was something just as powerful: HOPE.

We are incredibly grateful for the hundreds who joined us and for the amazing community partners who continue to stand beside these families and this community, including the Town of Mount Pleasant, Mount Pleasant Police Department, Charleston Center, and everyone who helped make the 8th Annual Light the Way for Hope possible.

And we have reason to be hopeful. We’ve seen a significant reduction in overdoses in Mount Pleasant over the last year. That progress comes from a community working together—education, prevention, Narcan access, treatment, recovery support, and partnerships that continue long after events like last night are over.

There is still work to do. There are still families who need us. And there are still lives we can reach.

Last night we remembered those we’ve lost. Today, we keep showing up for those who are still here. 💜
