TOUCH OVER TOOLS: Because The Fascia Knows the Difference 🐓🤲

I use a lot of modalities in my work—PEMF, laser, cryotherapy, NeuroStim, cupping, kinesiology tape and more. They all have a purpose, and when used appropriately, they can be incredibly valuable.

But they will never replace my hands.

Because functional therapy and bodywork isn’t simply about applying pressure to tissue, articulating a joint or treating the spot that appears sore.

It’s a conversation with the entire horse.

The moment my hands make contact, I’m gathering information.

I can feel not only the changes in temperature, but also the tissue density and hydration,
Fascial glide—or the lack of it,
subtle guarding.
Changes in muscle tone.
A shift in breathing.
The smallest resistance beneath my fingers.

And as the horse responds, my hands and I can respond respond appropriately with them.

I change the amount of Pressure.
I Change Direction.
I can work at a different Depth
Or Sometimes I move somewhere else.

And sometimes the most important thing I can do is simply stay there and wait. The key is to listen and make that decision based on what you feel or ā€œhearā€ through your hands.

But there is another part of this conversation that is difficult to explain unless you have experienced it firsthand.

There is an energy exchange between the horse and me.

That exchange is very real, and it is felt at an incredibly raw level.

I can feel the moment the horse begins to let its guard down—the moment the protective tension softens and the horse shifts into a more receptive, receiving mode.

That is when the exchange becomes truly intentional.

It feels almost magical.

In those moments, I’m not simply applying a technique or waiting for tissue to change. I’m feeling the horse meet me in the process, and underneath my fingertips, I can feel physiological changes occurring in real time.

A shift in tissue tone.
A change in temperature.
A subtle release in resistance.
A change in breathing or rhythm.
The tissue beginning to soften, glide or reorganize beneath my hands.

Tools apply a stimulus. Hands can listen to the response—and feel the conversation unfold.

That distinction matters because fascia is richly innervated and deeply connected to sensory processing, proprioception and the nervous system.

Slow, intentional touch provides sensory input through receptors within the skin, fascia, muscles and joints. That information travels back to the central nervous system and can influence muscle tone, protective guarding, body awareness and movement.

It also matters because the body is not made up of isolated parts. When you influence one area of tissue, you influence the whole body. Every structure is connected through layers of fascia, muscles, joints, nerves, circulation and the nervous system. A change in one area can create changes somewhere else—sometimes far beyond the place where my hands are working.

This is one reason I pay so much attention to the horse’s nervous system during treatment.

That deep breath.
The licking and chewing.
The softening eye.
The lowered head.
The shift through the feet.
The tissue suddenly melting beneath my hand.

Those aren’t interruptions in the treatment.

They ARE part of the treatment.

They tell me the horse is processing information, responding to the contact and becoming more available to the work.

And this is where hands-on work becomes so powerful.

Fascia doesn’t exist in neat, straight lines. It wraps, blends, spirals and connects structures throughout the body. My hands can follow those changes. I can contour around anatomy, feel where tissue wants to move and recognize when I’ve reached a barrier that isn’t ready to give.

Instead of forcing my way through it, I can ask the body a different question.

That’s a huge part of osteopathic functional therapy.

I’m not trying to overpower the horse’s body into the position I think it should have.

I’m trying to understand why it chose the pattern it’s currently using—and then give the nervous system enough appropriate sensory information to find a better option.

Because when I influence one tissue, I’m never working with that tissue in isolation.

I’m influencing the relationships around it.

A change in one fascial layer can affect how another layer glides. A change in muscle tone can alter joint movement. A change in proprioceptive input can influence balance and coordination. A change in one part of the body can give the entire system a new option.

When you influence some tissue, you affect all tissue.

There is another piece we sometimes underestimate:

Connection.

Horses are incredibly responsive to touch, pressure, proximity and intention. They communicate physically within the herd through grooming, leaning, movement and shared space.

When I put calm, intentional hands on a horse, I’m not just touching fascia.

I’m communicating safety.

I’m also entering into a relationship with the horse’s nervous system—one that requires attention, patience and a willingness to listen.

That relationship matters.

Because a guarded nervous system protects.

A nervous system that feels safe enough to explore another option can begin to reorganize.

And when that happens, we may see changes far beyond the exact place my hands were working—better balance, less bracing, improved proprioception, freer movement and a horse that simply looks more comfortable inhabiting its own body.

This is also why I don’t believe bodywork should ever become ā€œchasing sore spots.ā€

The painful area isn’t always the problem.

Sometimes it’s simply the place that has been working the hardest to compensate for something happening somewhere else.

So yes, I absolutely use technology.

But I use it through an osteopathic lens.

The tool supports the treatment.

My hands guide it.

Because tools can stimulate tissue.

But hands can feel, listen, interpret, adapt and connect.

Hands can feel the moment the horse moves from protection into receptivity.

They can feel the physiological changes occurring beneath the surface.

They can participate in that subtle, intentional exchange between horse and practitioner.

And sometimes the greatest change happens not because we forced the body to release…

…but because we created enough safety, connection and awareness for the horse to let go. ā¤ļøšŸ“

Historically, gastric impaction in horses has a poor outcome. Researchers at Utrecht University retrospectively reviewed cases of gastric impaction to evaluate whether treatment with cola was associated with improved survival.

Of the 125 cases included, 57.6% were discharged from the hospital. Horses treated with cola had a greater likelihood of survival: 82.8% vs. 35.8%. Non-Friesian horses treated with cola had 90% survival.

Why I Often Use PEMF Before Manual Functional Therapy šŸ“āš”ļø

There’s a reason you’ll often see me start a functional therapy session with PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) therapy before I ever begin manual manipulation.

It isn’t simply an ā€œextra modality.ā€ It’s part of preparing the tissues and nervous system for the work we’re about to ask the body to do.

Think of it as preparing the canvas before we begin painting.

PEMF exposes tissues to time-varying electromagnetic fields that induce very small electrical currents within the body. Research into PEMF suggests effects on cellular signaling and ion movement, with certain PEMF applications associated with changes in circulation, pain signaling, inflammation, and tissue-repair processes.

From a functional therapy perspective, that can make PEMF an excellent preparatory tool.

When a horse is experiencing pain, restriction, or compensation, the nervous system may respond with protective muscle guarding. Those tissues can feel tight and resistant—not necessarily because they simply need to be ā€œstretched out,ā€ but because the body is actively protecting an area.

Going directly into aggressive manual manipulation can sometimes mean working against that protective response.

Instead, I like to first give the nervous system and tissues an opportunity to settle.

Using PEMF before manual therapy may help:

šŸ”¹ Support local circulation and tissue perfusion
Improved blood flow supports delivery of oxygen and nutrients while assisting normal metabolic waste removal.

šŸ”¹ Influence pain signaling
Reducing discomfort can decrease the need for protective guarding and make subsequent movement more comfortable.

šŸ”¹ Decrease muscular guarding and promote relaxation
A horse that is less guarded generally allows us to assess and work with the tissues more effectively.

šŸ”¹ Prepare fascia and soft tissue for movement
Rather than immediately asking restricted tissue to lengthen or glide, we first create an environment more conducive to movement.

šŸ”¹ Improve tolerance of manual techniques
Once the horse is more comfortable and relaxed, techniques such as myofascial work, mobilization, stretching, range-of-motion work, and osteopathic articular balancing can often be performed with less force.

And that last piece is important.

Functional therapy should never be about overpowering the body.

My goal isn’t to force a joint, muscle, or fascial structure into a position. It is to determine why the body is protecting that area, decrease the input driving that protection, and then invite normal movement back into the system.

PEMF can help us begin that conversation before our hands ever do.

I frequently find that after appropriate PEMF application, the tissues feel different beneath my hands. The horse may breathe more deeply, soften through the topline, lick and chew, lower the head, or simply become more willing to move through an area that was previously guarded.

Then the manual portion of the session becomes less about making something move and more about guiding movement that the body is ready to allow.

That is one of the biggest distinctions in the way I approach equine rehabilitation:

Prepare the nervous system.
Prepare the tissue.
Assess the whole horse.
Then manipulate only what needs to be manipulated.

Because sometimes the most effective manual therapy happens when we’ve done enough preparation that our hands barely have to ask. šŸ“ā¤ļø

🐓 WITHER ROCKING: A SMALL MOVEMENT WITH WHOLE-BODY IMPACT

One technique you may see me incorporate during an osteopathic functional therapy session is wither rocking. It can look incredibly simple from the outside—but biomechanically, there is a lot happening beneath our hands.

The withers are more than the ā€œhigh pointā€ at the base of the neck. This region is intimately connected with the thoracic spine, ribs, scapulae, fascia and thoracic sling musculature that suspends the horse’s trunk between the forelimbs.

Unlike humans, horses don’t have a bony attachment connecting the forelimb to the rib cage. Instead, the trunk is essentially suspended within a muscular and fascial sling.

That thoracic sling includes important structures such as the:

• Serratus ventralis
• Pectoral musculature
• Trapezius
• Rhomboids
• Subclavius
• Associated cervical, thoracic and fascial connections

When this system becomes restricted, guarded or poorly coordinated, we can see a horse that appears to drop through the chest, become heavy on the forehand, lose freedom through the shoulder, shorten the stride, struggle to lift the base of the neck or have difficulty properly engaging and carrying itself.

So why do we rock the withers?

Wither rocking introduces a gentle, rhythmic oscillation through the thoracic region. Rather than forcing range of motion, we are asking the horse’s nervous and musculoskeletal systems to allow movement.

Through carefully applied rocking, we can assess how freely motion transfers through the withers, ribs, scapular region and thoracic spine while encouraging relaxation and improved mobility within those tissues.

The goal may include:

✨ Encouraging mobility through the thoracic spine and rib cage
✨ Reducing protective muscular and fascial tension
✨ Improving movement of the scapula over the thorax
✨ Supporting more effective function of the thoracic sling
✨ Improving proprioceptive input and neuromuscular awareness
✨ Encouraging the horse to lift through the sternum and base of the neck
✨ Supporting better posture, balance and weight distribution
✨ Creating greater freedom through the shoulder and forelimb
✨ Helping restore more efficient movement throughout the kinetic chain

And this is where the osteopathic lens becomes so important.

We aren’t simply trying to ā€œloosen the withers.ā€

We’re asking:

Why isn’t this area moving?

Is the restriction coming from the thoracic spine? The ribs? The sternum? Pectorals? Serratus? Scapular mobility? Cervicothoracic junction? Or is this region compensating for dysfunction somewhere completely different?

Because the body works as a unit.

When the thoracic sling can properly support and elevate the trunk between the forelimbs, we can begin to change how the horse organizes its entire body—from the sternum and shoulders, through the spine, and ultimately into the hindquarters.

Sometimes one of the quietest techniques we perform can tell us—and the horse’s nervous system—an incredible amount.

Restore motion. Improve function. Bring the body back toward balance. 🐓

You may have seen the big loops, blankets or pads pulsing around a horse and wondered… what exactly is PEMF doing?

PEMF stands for Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy. It is a non-invasive modality that uses controlled, time-varying electromagnetic fields to interact with electrically responsive tissues within the body.

And there is some pretty fascinating physiology behind it.

🧬 THE SCIENCE: HOW DOES PEMF WORK?

Every cell maintains an electrical potential across its membrane. That electrical environment plays an important role in cellular signaling, ion movement and normal tissue function.

PEMF devices generate a changing magnetic field. According to Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction, a changing magnetic field can induce very small electrical currents within conductive tissues.

Those induced electrical effects may influence cellular signaling pathways, including processes involving calcium ions (Ca²⁺), nitric oxide signaling and other mechanisms associated with tissue repair and inflammatory regulation.

In other words, we aren’t ā€œputting electricity into the horse.ā€ We are exposing tissues to a pulsed magnetic field capable of inducing electrical activity within the body’s conductive tissues.

🩸 WHAT ABOUT CIRCULATION?

PEMF may support local microcirculation and vascular responses, which can be valuable when we’re working with tissues that need adequate oxygen and nutrient delivery and efficient removal of metabolic byproducts.

This is one reason we frequently incorporate PEMF into programs involving muscular recovery, stiffness and rehabilitation.

šŸ’Ŗ MUSCLE & SOFT-TISSUE RECOVERY

For performance horses, PEMF can be a useful adjunct for:

• Supporting muscle recovery following exercise
• Helping manage muscular soreness and stiffness
• Supporting normal circulation
• Promoting relaxation
• Supporting tissue recovery following injury
• Maintaining mobility and comfort during rehabilitation
• Helping horses recover between demanding training or competition days

But here’s where our approach becomes especially important…

PEMF isn’t something we simply apply everywhere because a horse is ā€œsore.ā€

We want to understand WHY that tissue is sore.

A tight lumbar region may actually be compensating for dysfunction elsewhere. A sore shoulder may be the result of altered loading from the opposite hind limb. A chronically tight muscle may be protecting an unstable or restricted structure.

From an osteopathic and functional therapy perspective, our goal is to assess the entire horse—structure, movement, compensation patterns, fascia and function—and then determine where PEMF can best support what we’re trying to accomplish.

⚔ PEMF IS A TOOL — NOT THE ENTIRE TREATMENT

PEMF doesn’t replace veterinary diagnostics, appropriate rehabilitation, proper conditioning, hoof balance, nutrition or good horsemanship.

Instead, it can be an incredibly useful adjunct modality when incorporated thoughtfully into a comprehensive plan.

Think about the cell models we had to make in elementary school science class that identified the nucleus, proļæ¼tons, neutrons and electrons.
When a cell is fatigued or damaged in trauma the electrical charge is concentrated at one end of the cell wall. This causes the cell wall to become rigid and less permeable. Thus, compromising the cell’s ability to flush out toxins and absorb nutrients effectively, decreasing cell function.

When we induce the electrical effects with PEMF, we can influence cellular signaling pathways, including processes involving calcium ions (Ca²⁺), nitric oxide signaling and other mechanisms associated with tissue repair and inflammatory regulation.

🐓 ā€œWhy is my horse struggling this summer?ā€

Over the last several weeks, I’ve been asked the same question again and again:

ā€œWhy is my horse suddenly so sore?ā€
ā€œWhy can’t they seem to maintain their fitness this year like they have in previous summers?ā€

While there is rarely just one answer, I believe one of the biggest contributing factors this year here in Colorado is something many of us have been living with every day—persistent poor air quality from the surrounding wildfires.

Smoke doesn’t just affect people. It affects our horses, too.

When horses inhale smoke and fine particulate matter, it can irritate and inflame the respiratory tract while reducing the efficiency of oxygen exchange deep within the lungs. Even if your horse isn’t coughing, their body may still be working much harder just to deliver oxygen where it’s needed.

Red blood cells are responsible for transporting oxygen from the lungs to every muscle, tendon, ligament, organ, and tissue in the body. When oxygen uptake is compromised, those red blood cells deliver less oxygen to working tissues.

The result may include:
• Quicker fatigue during exercise
• Reduced stamina and endurance
• Slower recovery after work
• Muscle soreness and tightness
• Decreased performance
• Elevated respiratory effort
• Reluctance to move forward or engage from behind
• Longer recovery times following training

Simply put, muscles cannot perform efficiently without adequate oxygen. As tissues receive less oxygen than they need during exercise, they rely more heavily on less efficient energy pathways, leading to earlier fatigue, increased muscle tension, and reduced performance. Horses may appear ā€œout of shapeā€ when, in reality, their respiratory system is simply being challenged by the environment.

A quick science note: Many people think smoke ā€œreduces the oxygen in the blood.ā€ In most cases, that’s not exactly what’s happening. Instead, the tiny particles in wildfire smoke irritate and inflame the airways, making it more difficult for oxygen to move efficiently from the lungs into the bloodstream. The body must work harder to achieve the same oxygen delivery, meaning muscles fatigue sooner and recovery takes longer. In severe smoke exposure, carbon monoxide can also interfere with oxygen transport by binding to hemoglobin, further reducing the amount of oxygen available to the body’s tissues.

One supportive therapy we’ve found especially valuable during wildfire season is HaloTherapy (dry salt therapy).

Sometimes the issue isn’t conditioning—it’s physiology.

If your horse seems unusually sore, is struggling to recover after exercise, or simply isn’t performing like they normally do, don’t assume they’re just ā€œout of shape.ā€ Their body may be telling you it’s working much harder just to breathe.

Sometimes the first step toward better performance isn’t asking more of your horse—it’s helping them breathe easier. ā¤ļøšŸ“

🧠 Let’s Have A Conversation About Golgi Tendon Organs vs. Muscle Spindles

When we think about movement, we often focus on the muscles themselves. But hidden within every muscle and tendon are tiny sensory receptors that constantly communicate with the brain, helping your horse move with balance, coordination, and confidence.

🐓 Muscle Spindles think like, ā€œHow far have I stretched?ā€

Muscle spindles are located within the muscle belly. Their primary job is to monitor muscle length and the speed of stretch.

When a muscle is stretched too quickly, muscle spindles send an immediate message to the spinal cord, triggering the muscle to contract. This protective reflex helps prevent overstretching and contributes to posture, balance, and precise movement.

Think of muscle spindles as the horse’s motion sensors.

🐓 Golgi Tendon Organs think like, ā€œHow much force am I producing?ā€

Golgi tendon organs are found where the muscle transitions into the tendon. Rather than measuring length, they monitor tension and force passing through the musculotendinous unit.

When excessive tension is detected, they encourage the muscle to relax, helping prevent overload and protecting both the tendon and muscle from injury. This is how we can catch something heavy and not tear the tendon in the process.

Think of the Golgi tendon organ as the horse’s force regulator.

āš ļø What Happens When the Golgi Tendon Organ Isn’t Functioning Well?

After injury, chronic compensation, scar tissue, pain, repetitive strain, or prolonged abnormal loading, the Golgi tendon organ may no longer accurately regulate tension.

This can contribute to:
• Persistent muscle guarding
• Protective bracing patterns
• Difficulty engaging the topline
• Reduced range of motion
• Uneven weight bearing
• Shortened stride
• Poor force transfer through the body
• Recurrent soft tissue injuries
• Difficulty maintaining collection or impulsion
• Compensation that eventually affects joints, fascia, and other muscle groups

The muscle may continue to ā€œhold onā€ long after the original problem has resolved because the nervous system still perceives the area as unsafe.

šŸ‘ An Osteopathic Functional Therapy Perspective

At Elite Equine Rehab, we don’t simply chase tight muscles—we ask why the nervous system is choosing to hold tension. We identify the source of the restriction to the load and help to release it.
