Questions feel productive but for a child still developing language, they can actually create more pressure than opportunity.
Instead:
1️⃣Make observations instead of asking: Describe what your child is doing or seeing. Instead of asking, “What are you drawing?” try saying, “Wow, that is a huge blue triangle!” This models language and vocabulary without demanding an answer.
2️⃣Follow their lead: Join in and play with whatever has their attention. Talk about what you are doing in parallel. This shows you are interested in their world and encourages them to share their thoughts naturally.
3️⃣Master the power of the pause: After you make a comment, wait for at least 5 seconds. Silence gives your child time to process what you said and formulate their response, or gives them space to initiate their own topic.
Less asking, more showing up alongside them. Try one of these this week and notice what shifts.
