When is a “tongue tie” NOT actually a tongue tie? 👅👇

It’s a question I hear many times a week: “Is this a tongue tie?”

Here is the truth: We do NOT diagnose a tongue tie based on looks alone.

A visible frenulum is just anatomy. A true tongue tie is a functional diagnosis.

If your baby has a prominent frenulum, but is:

✅ Latching comfortably
✅ Transferring milk well
✅ Gaining weight
✅ Feeding without compensatory strain
..their tongue is doing its job! An anatomical variation without functional restriction isn’t a medical issue.

Evaluating function is not always accurate right after birth, which is why we generally like to assess, improve positioning and technique and try other methodologies to improve oral function before referring a newborn for release.

A baby needs time to learn and adapt to life outside the womb. Fast or intense births leave temporary neck and jaw tightness that can mimic a tie until baby uncurls.

Oral mechanics change once mature milk comes in, and babies are typically not so great at breastfeeding in the beginning; giving baby a week or two to practice lets us see true tongue mobility. I find that most often it’s a positioning issue, not a tongue issue.

Our goal is ALWAYS to avoid referring your perfect newborn for an unnecessary surgery. If a release isn’t clinically needed for feeding, we don’t recommend it.

Instead, we assess together. We look inside your baby’s mouth with you so you have baseline data on their anatomy for the future. Major medical organizations agree: we do not perform surgical procedures on infants for hypothetical future problems like speech or orthodontics when current evidence doesn’t support “just in case” releases.

We treat the baby, not just the tissue.

I have trained with some of the best, including hands on with our local providers. I’ve even had a frenectomy myself 👅 as an adult. I’m not anti-frenectomy, I’m just anti-unnecessary interventions and costs during the most vulnerable time of you and your babies’ lives. 💗

We felt like it was time to create a space for everyone, because being a parent is hard, babies are wonderful but demanding, and simply getting out of the house and having an adult conversation can change the whole dang day.

But we also wanted to provide a space where everyone belongs. No judgement, just support.

We ARE lactation consultants, so we will have a brief discussion topic or demo each week related to b***s, feeding babies, new parenthood, postpartum mental health, etc based on current evidence, news, new research or products, etc

Everyone is welcome 💗☀️🌈

No matter how you feed your baby
No matter where or how you gave birth
Pregnant folks welcome
Moms and Dads welcome, grandmas etc too
Doulas and other lactation and birth workers welcome, bring cards
Kindness is the rule ✌🏽

We have a tiny waiting room area with toys but it may be challenging to keep a toddler contained, toddler toy donations welcome!

I recently had the pleasure of joining a group of doulas for an educational training for recertification, and realized most of them have no idea what we do. ☺️

An IBCLC is a board certified lactation consultant, NOT a counselor, and is your go-to for infant feeding support, no matter how your clients feed their babies, and part of the collaborative allied healthcare team. Our goal is to make this season of life not just -okayish- but enjoyable for parents and babies.

We each required around 1000 clinical contact hours, 90 hours of lactation specific education credits, and most likely a health sciences degree to get here. I personally volunteered as the area’s La Leche League Leader for ten years providing peer counseling support for FREE, and I also have ten years of active clinical experience and continued education with Sunshine Lactation. I also breastfed my three kids for ten consecutive years.

We provide prenatal consults and education, where we touch on the continuum concept and the importance of support and education in birth. But, we are not doulas, so we refer out for further education and birth/postpartum support. In fact, it’s on our intake form.

We prep parents for the realities of a new baby and educate them on what is biologically normal for humans and infant feeding, but also throw some silly in there (iykyk)

We cover pumping and bottlefeeding when needed and believe in helping moms maintain their sovereignty postpartum via various feeding options 💗

We are experts in positioning and latching and my GOSH please let us help your clients because we do things -differently-

We help with biologically normal infant sleep, maternal sleep, maternal mental health, herbal support, AND of course all the other stuff like ouchy ni***es, plugged ducts and mastitis (ask me about my lymphatic breast massage skillz), tongue and lip ties, breast refusal, bottle refusal, relactation, induced lactation, and everything in between.

We help with so much more than just latching and positioning.

We are board certified lactation consultants and have a ridiculous amount of additional education and training in supporting babies with tongue ties and other oral tissues, and supporting these babies post release when needed.

We are also infant feeding specialist and are trained to help you with bottlefeeding, no matter what’s in the bottle.

We have extensive training and experience in helping with latching pain and damage, pumping including getting that perfect fit because it should be painless, positioning your baby, making feeds faster and easier, and overall making this time of life easier for you and your baby.

Jess is additionally trained in supporting twins, providing clinical herbal guidance, babywearing, providing guidance to improve maternal and infant sleep, and maternal mental health support is a big focus of our practice.

We offer prenatal appointments that provide education and one on one q&a with continued support and access to our online class, all within a one hour appointment often covered by insurance.
