The new A.M.L. Counseling & Wellness website is officially LIVE! 🤎

This website is a home for everything A.M.L.: individual counseling, trauma-sensitive yoga, community outreach, grief support, community-based groups, upcoming events, and more.

But one of my favorite additions is the Look Within wall.
A.M.L. may be my initials, but they also represent the values that guide me: Authenticity. Meaning. Living Purposefully. Now, you have the opportunity to think about what your initials could mean to you.

Visit the Look Within wall on the home page to see the life acronyms and values others have shared (don't worry, no identifying information is taken or has to be shared), create your own, and add it to the wall. Just by participating, you become a small part of the A.M.L. community and leave something behind that may inspire someone else to look within, too.

The website is live, so go explore! And when you make it to the wall, I want to know: If your initials or a meaningful acronym represented the values guiding your life, what would they stand for? 🪞

I know y’all noticed I’ve been MIA… 👀 And some of you have definitely noticed that things look a little different around here.

The last few weeks brought an unexpected situation that required me to say goodbye and change the name of the business I’ve spent the last year building. Was that in my plans? Absolutely not. 😂 But somewhere in the middle of figuring out what came next, I realized something: you can take the name, but you can’t take me away from me.

And oddly enough, that brought me right back to what I emphasize with my clients every day. No one else has lived your exact life. Your circumstances, your history, your experiences, and every little thing that has happened along the way have shaped the person you are in this very moment. What you choose to do with that life doesn’t have to make sense to everyone else. It has to work for YOU.

So when it came time to rename this practice, I didn’t want to just find another name and move on. I wanted something that reflected the person behind the work and what I want this practice to represent. So I went back to the one thing that was always mine: A.M.L.

My initials, but also the foundation of the work we do here: Authenticity. Meaning. Living Purposefully. Understanding who you are, making meaning of what has shaped you, and using that knowledge to intentionally build a life that works for you.
What started as an unexpected and frustrating change gave me the opportunity to create something that feels even more aligned with who I am, the work that I do, and where this practice is going.

So after being a little quiet on the creek, it’s FINALLY official:

Introducing the new A.M.L. Counseling & Wellness. A space for counseling, wellness, and community. 🤎

You weren’t meant to just get through life. You were meant to make life work for you.

Authenticity | Meaning | Living Purposefully

School teaches you a lot, but somehow nobody gives you a syllabus for everything that comes with it. 📚

The changing friendships. Family expectations. Questioning your major or career path. Trying to figure out who you are outside of school and accomplishments. Managing stress while still keeping up with everything. Or realizing that the life you once imagined for yourself may look a little different now.

No matter what kind of student you are or what type of schooling you're navigating, some of the hardest parts of back-to-school season have nothing to do with what's happening in the classroom.

Hi there! I'm Asya, a licensed therapist who works with teens and young adults navigating the parts of life that don't always come with clear instructions. I offer space to slow down, process what you're experiencing, better understand yourself, and figure out how to make life work for you.

I currently offer the following services throughout North Carolina:
• Individual counseling for teens + adults (16+) (VIRTUAL ONLY!)
• Trauma-sensitive yoga (individual + groups)
• Community groups + wellness programming

My availability is:
Biweekly Sundays | 9 AM–3 PM
Tuesdays & Wednesdays | 9 AM–5 PM
Thursdays | 9 AM–12 PM
Fridays | 9 AM–3 PM

I accept Private Pay, Aetna + Aetna SHP, Blue Cross Blue Shield, NC Medicaid (Carolina Complete Health, Healthy Blue, and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan). Limited Pay-What-You-Can spots are also available.

📚 You already registered for enough this semester. Support doesn't have to be another thing you figure out on your own.

✨ Giving Back ✨

Today was such a great day participating in The Bacon Foundation’s Back-to-School Bash and having the ability to be a resource for so many families! Many took home handouts, journals, and, of course, sensory STICKERS! 💚

Mental health is such an important topic of discussion for us all, especially in minority communities, and I’m grateful to be in a position to be a safe person and resource for those navigating mental health stressors and those wanting to have conversations about mental health.

So blessed to be able to give back, serve others, and make a difference in the communities around me. Looking forward to more opportunities to connect, collaborate, and continue bridging mental health and wellness resources into our communities! 🪴

Last night, I had the opportunity to facilitate The Friendship Gap, and one thing stood out to me: Many of us aren’t struggling because we’re “bad at friendship.” We’re navigating a world where the expectations, opportunities, and unspoken rules of relationships have changed.

Between busy schedules, changing life stages, remote work, social media, and the lasting impact of COVID-19, making and maintaining friendships often requires far more intention than it once did.

One of the most meaningful parts of the evening was creating space for people to realize they weren’t alone. We had honest conversations about the challenges of adult friendship, reflected on how our relationships have evolved over time, and explored practical tools for building, maintaining, and strengthening meaningful connections.

Friendships, like any relationship, require communication, flexibility, vulnerability, and intentionality. They aren’t always easy, but they are worth investing in.

Thank you to everyone who joined the conversation and trusted me to be a small part of your wellness journey. I hope you walked away feeling seen, encouraged, and equipped with a few new tools to carry into your relationships!

Two things can be true at the same time.

You can feel anxious and still take one small step forward.
You can accept yourself today and still want to grow.
You can make a mistake and still be a good person.
You can feel hurt and still choose a calm response.
You can’t change the past and still influence what happens next.
You can be struggling and still be strong.

This is dialectical thinking — the skill of moving away from “either/or” and learning to hold “both/and.”

So often, black-and-white thinking tells us:
“If I failed, I’m a failure.”
“If I’m upset, I’m not coping.”
“If someone disagrees with me, they don’t care.”
“If I need help, I’m weak.”

But life is rarely that simple.

A more balanced thought might be:
“I didn’t get the outcome I wanted, and I can learn from it.”
“I’m overwhelmed, and I can use a coping skill.”
“This conversation is hard, and we can still try to understand each other.”
“I need support, and that is part of being human.”

That tiny word “and” can change everything.

It can reduce shame.
It can soften self-judgement.
It can help with emotional regulation.
It can make space for growth, empathy and resilience.

You don’t have to choose between accepting yourself and changing.
You can do both.

Mental Health Awareness Month means a lot to me, not just as a therapist, but as a person who has had to navigate my own mental health journey too.

There was a time in my life where I was overwhelmed, struggling silently, trying to hold everything together while still functioning for everyone else. Healing DEFINITELY didn’t happen overnight (it actually took several years), and it didn’t happen alone. Community, support, self-reflection, lots of tears, and my own therapists all played a role in helping me work through some of the hardest seasons of my life.

A big part of why I chose this field is because I know what it feels like to want things to get better but not fully know where to start or what to do. I know what it’s like for timelines to be diverted. I know what it’s like to carry pain quietly while still trying to show up every day. I know what it feels like to know who you want to be, but feel like there’s so many things keeping you from that idealized version of yourself.

Now, I have the opportunity to be a source of support, guidance, accountability, and light for people navigating those similar feelings and experiences. Now, I get to work with so many different people and work with them towards growth and healing, helping them take their power back. That is something I never take lightly.

Healing is possible. Growth is possible. Change is possible. Sometimes the first step is simply allowing yourself to acknowledge that YOU deserve support too and finding a trusted person who is willing to listen. 🤍

shift your lens. shift your LIFE.
