That rust-colored stain on a stainless steel instrument might not be rust at all.
Dried blood, bio-debris, cleaning chemistry, water spots, excessive heat, and other processing conditions can all cause discoloration that may be mistaken for corrosion.
So how can you tell the difference?
A simple pencil eraser test can help. Remove the discoloration and inspect the surface underneath. If the steel is smooth and intact, you're likely dealing with a stain. If you find pitting or permanent surface damage, corrosion has occurred.

New peer-reviewed publication featuring the EVOM™ Auto.
Scientists at Johnson & Johnson (Belgium and Pennsylvania) just published their findings in Toxicology in Vitro, using WPI’s EVOM™ Auto automated TEER to evaluate human colonoid-derived monolayers (hCDMs) as a next-generation model for drug toxicity and pharmacodynamics research.
Key findings:
🔹 High-throughput, reproducible barrier integrity monitoring across 96-well hCDM and Caco-2 monolayers
🔹 Functional QC readout confirming when hCDMs reached physiological tight-junction formation
🔹 Mechanistic insight into barrier disruption patterns tied to diarrheagenic compound sensitivity
🔹 hCDMs maintained a physiological barrier (332 Ω·cm²) and responded to toxicants more like clinical models than Caco-2
🔹 Enabled integrated PK/PD evaluation linking drug accumulation to barrier function
