With the seasons changing and upcoming winter months, did you know that these factors can affect your horses health too? Some of these issues include:
- Increase in joint pain and inflammation in arthritic horses
➡️Horses experiencing joint pain and horses with arthritis tend to become more uncomfortable. The pain is more prominent. Why is this? During the winter months the barometric pressure fluctuates, causing the tissue to expand and contract. Sudden change in temperature will affect this issue as well.
- Decrease in range of motion/stiffness
➡️During the colder months, it can be difficult to exercise horses due to the weather. When it is chilly outside horse muscles can become tense and stiff especially when there is a decrease in exercise.
- Colic
➡️ While the weather/temperatures are changing right now this can trigger colic in horses. Barometric pressure not only expands and contracts tissue but can also do the same but for a horse’s intestinal tract as well. A horse’s water intake will often times decrease leading to dehydration which as also can cause colic.
