I intended to take a thirty-minute walk today.

The summer heat and humidity had other plans. After about ten minutes, I realized my body was asking me to slow down.

Instead of pushing myself to complete the walk I had planned, I began noticing what was around me…the richness of the green leaves, the fullness of the Spanish moss and how alive everything seemed in the humid air.

I slipped off my sandals and placed my feet on the roots of a large old oak. Then I walked slowly through the clover and grass from tree to tree. What began as a shortened walk became the highlight of my day.

It reminded me that an intention does not have to become an obligation. We can begin with a plan, listen when something asks us to shift and remain curious about what the change might offer.

Sometimes caring for ourselves means continuing.
Sometimes it means changing course.
Both can move us forward.

One of the greatest challenges of modern life isn’t that we don’t care about our wellbeing.

It’s that we rarely pause long enough to notice what our body, mind, and spirit have been trying to tell us.

Sometimes wellness begins with something surprisingly simple.

A quiet morning.

A walk.

A prayer or meditation.

A cup of coffee.

A conversation.

A massage.

A deep breath.

A moment of stillness.

Only when we slow down can we begin to recognize what needs our attention.

Perhaps tending to our wellbeing doesn’t always begin with doing more.

Sometimes it begins with noticing more.

Wellness (physical, spiritual, emotional) is not something we achieve once and then keep forever.

Like a garden, it requires attention, adaptation, and care throughout the different seasons of life.

For some, that means movement and exercise. For others, it may include bodywork, restorative rest, spiritual practices, intellectual endeavors, meaningful relationships, time in nature, creative pursuits, or simply learning to slow down and listen more carefully.

The goal isn’t perfection.

It’s remaining engaged with the people, places, and activities that bring meaning to our lives.

A life well lived requires tending.
