Why Hospice Encourages a DNR

A question we hear a lot:

"Why does hospice want a DNR? Are they giving up?"

Not at all.

First, it helps to understand what a DNR actually is.

A DNR stands for Do Not Resuscitate. It is a medical order that tells healthcare providers not to perform CPR if a person's heart stops beating or they stop breathing.

It only applies in that specific situation. It does not mean other care stops.

Hospice brings up a DNR because the focus has shifted—from trying to cure an illness to supporting someone through the natural final stage of life.

This isn't about stopping care.

It's about choosing the kind of care that makes the most sense.

💙 CPR was designed for sudden, unexpected emergencies—not for the natural progression of advanced illness.

💙 For most hospice patients, CPR is very unlikely to restore them to the quality of life they had before. Even if the heart starts again, many people never regain consciousness or require intensive life support.

💙 CPR can also be very hard on the body. Broken ribs, internal injuries, ventilators, and ICU care are common outcomes, often adding suffering instead of meaningful time.

A DNR does not mean:

❌ No treatment
❌ No care
❌ No compassion
❌ No one being there

What it really means is:

✅ Choosing comfort over chaos
✅ Choosing dignity over invasive procedures
✅ Choosing peace when a natural death is already occurring

Hospice still provides:

💙 Expert pain and symptom management
💙 Emotional and spiritual support
💙 Education and guidance for patients and families
💙 Compassionate nursing care every step of the way

A DNR isn't about giving up.

It's about recognizing when treatments are no longer helping and focusing on what matters most: comfort, dignity, and honoring a person's wishes.

When families truly understand what a DNR means, much of the fear begins to fade. They are able to make decisions based on knowledge instead of panic.
