I pasted and copied this from someone's page. It just popped up in my memories. This is soo very true. I personally don't have a significant other at home, but even my pets don't understand sometimes.....
Today, while leaving work, I found myself in an elevator with a very defeated looking nurse (both of us leaving well after the end of our shift). She’s on the phone with, I assume, a loved one & is struggling hard to explain why she’s leaving work late. Each response makes my heart ache a little more:
“I can’t just leave my team or my patient in the middle of an emergency”
“I don’t get to just clock out because it’s the end of my shift”
I can’t just walk out”
Finally, she was so tired that she just kept repeating “it doesn’t work like that” over and over again.
So this ones for the people who love nurses, police officers, firefighters, doctors, paramedics, respiratory therapists, etc.
Please remember that we need your support, we need you to be patient with us. We will not always be home on time, we can’t just leave in the middle of a situation where people need us. We made a promise to the people we serve, just like we’ve made promises to you.
We love you. We love our patients/the public as well. We love our jobs & our co-workers.
Please remember why you love us the next time you get frustrated that we can’t come to your cook-out on a Saturday, or we come home and go straight to bed because we are just THAT tired, or miss a birthday party because of work. Please remember that you love us because of our dedication to others, our will to make the world better, our strength & endless love. Please remember that you fell in love with us for the same reasons you’re frustrated with us now.
I love my boyfriend for his dedication to our city & it’s people, but sometimes I miss him when he’s stuck on a case until 4am.
I love my best friend because she is one of the most compassionate nurses I’ve met, but I get disappointed when I want to see her but we are on opposite weekends.
I’m telling you these examples because even though it’s unfortunate that I can’t always be with them when I want to be, I understand & would never hold their dedication & hard work against them.
Please continue to be patient & love us through all of it. Our jobs are not easy but coming home should always be ❤️ See less
