Speech Pathways Speech Therapy - Serving Fresno, Tulare, Visalia, and Kings County I am Deborah DeLong and I have been a speech pathologist for 20 years.

I love being a speech pathologist! My desire at speech pathways whether I am working with children or adults, is not just to provide speech therapy, but to come alongside families and walk with them as we journey down the path of speech-language habilitation or rehabilitation. I will strive to make therapy fun and motivating for my clients and provide resources and helpful information to families.

A little look at how we spent our Staff Development Day. 💛

We spent the morning learning, taking part in professional development, and talking through some upcoming insurance and billing changes. We also made sure we are all on the same page for our families. 🤓

Then came the fun part. We played some games, took on a few team building challenges, and tackled an escape room. There may or may not have been a little friendly competition involved. 👀🐻

It was such a fun day together! We are thankful for this team, the laughs we share, and most of all, the families who welcome us into their lives and trust us to be part of their journey. 🧡

When kids squish, scoop, pour, splash, dig, squeeze, and explore, they’re doing so much more than “just playing.” 💛

Sensory play can support regulation, attention, motor development, problem-solving, and—one of our favorite parts—communication!

In speech therapy, sensory play creates natural opportunities for children to:

🫧 Learn and use new words
🫧 Request, comment, and make choices
🫧 Practice taking turns and shared attention
🫧 Follow directions and learn concepts like in, out, more, big, wet, and sticky
🫧 Communicate through play in ways that feel motivating and meaningful

For neurodivergent children, sensory play can be especially valuable. Every child experiences and processes sensory input differently, so providing supportive, child-led opportunities to explore can help us better understand what helps a child feel comfortable, engaged, and ready to connect.

The goal isn’t to make every child tolerate every sensation. It’s about respecting their sensory preferences and using the things they genuinely enjoy as a bridge to play, connection, and communication. 🫶

So yes… we will absolutely find a way to bring sensory play into the conversation. 😂

🗣️ Did you know speech sounds are built step-by-step? 🐻

In speech therapy, we typically target a sound through a hierarchy:

💛 Isolated sound
🧡 Word
💛 Sentence
🧡 Conversation

As accuracy becomes more consistent at one level, we increase the challenge and work toward using the sound naturally in everyday speech. ✨

The sound environment matters, too! 👀

A sound may be easier or harder depending on the sounds and vowels around it. Choosing the right words can help set a child up for success! 🌟

🎓 Future SLP Spotlight: Yliana

✨ Meet Yliana!

Yliana Renteria is a graduate student clinician from San José State University who recently completed her first clinical practicum here at Speech Pathways.

Starting your first clinical experience is an exciting step in becoming an SLP. Throughout her time with us, Yliana learned the importance of time management, building rapport with students, and creating therapy sessions that are meaningful and engaging.

One experience that stood out to Yliana was feeding therapy. Getting hands on experience in this area sparked a new interest and helped her explore another side of speech-language pathology.

When we asked Yliana what advice she would give future graduate clinicians, she shared:

💙 Have a positive attitude

We are so grateful to have been part of Yliana’s first clinical practicum experience and wish her continued success as she works toward becoming an SLP.

Technology will continue to evolve, but connection will always remain at the heart of speech therapy. 💛
