Your teeth register every clench. Your attention often doesn't. Each tooth sits in a cushion of tissue full of pressure sensors, the reason you can tell a grape from a walnut without looking. But they're tuned for chewing, so a slow, steady clench gets tuned out. That's why people often notice the after-effects first: a tired jaw, tender teeth.

Some people bite harder asleep than they can awake. In a 2001 sleep-lab study, 10 people with sleep bruxism wore a force sensor overnight. The typical clenching event was about 50 lb, and each person's strongest averaged about half their maximum daytime bite. In some people, it reached about 112%. You can't catch sleep bruxism in the moment. If you think it's happening to you, talk to your dentist or a sleep specialist.

Chewing uses less than half your jaw's strength. In a 1981 study, chewing averaged about 36% of each person's maximum bite, and swallowing about 41%. Clenching isn't capped there. It can go higher; you can hold it, and there's no food in between to spread the load. That's why noticing it matters.

Day clencher, night clencher, or both? Signs that may point to daytime: teeth touching while you work, tension that builds through the day. Signs that may point to nighttime: a tired jaw when you wake up, someone hearing you grind. Try a one-week check-in: three times a day, ask "are my teeth touching?", and every morning, ask "is my jaw tired?" Then take what you notice to your dentist.

Nobody knows exactly how many people clench their jaw. Bruxism is hard to study for three reasons: most people don't know they do it, nighttime clenching needs an overnight sleep study to record, and daytime clenching comes and goes with stress. So the numbers are ranges. Not because clenching is rare. Because it's hard to catch.

Are your teeth touching right now? Jaw clenching during the day is quiet, often light, and rarely hurts in the moment. In one study, random phone check-ins found people's jaws weren't resting about 28% of the time, mostly teeth touching. Unlike nighttime clenching, this one you can learn to catch. Notice. Release. Reset.

You track your heart, your sleep, and your steps. But jaw clenching is quiet, often light, and easy for your brain to tune out, and a ring or watch can't sense it. Start with three check-ins today: Are my teeth touching? If they are: Notice. Release. Reset.

If you clench your jaw at night, the research shows something surprising. In a 2001 sleep-lab study, brain activity rose about 4 seconds before sleep bruxism episodes, then heart rate rose, then the jaw moved. Brain. Heart. Jaw. That's why you can't catch nighttime clenching in the moment. If you think it's happening to you, talk to your dentist or a sleep specialist.

Biofeedback vs. neurofeedback: biofeedback is the whole category, where a sensor shows you a body signal like heart rate, breathing, muscle tension, or temperature. Neurofeedback is one type of biofeedback that uses brain waves only. All neurofeedback is biofeedback. Not all biofeedback is neurofeedback.

There isn't one kind of jaw clenching. There are two. Sleep bruxism happens while you sleep, and you can't catch it in the moment. Awake bruxism happens at your desk or on your phone, and you can learn to catch it. At night, you protect: talk to your dentist. During the day, you notice.
