Cassidy's Crusaders

Cassidy's Crusaders Cassidy was born Treacher Collins Syndrome. We had no idea until she was born. She is a miracle. Cassidy has a severe case of it.

Cassidy Claire Nicholas, Jeremy and Eva Nicholas' first child, was born with Treacher-Collins Syndrome on August 5, 2012. Born seven weeks early, her parents and doctors had no idea that she had this rare genetic disorder before her birth. Had Eva not gone into labor early, there was a very high chance that Cassidy would have died at birth as she had no viable airway. Her doctor, Dr. Andrew Scott,

who will be treating her, said it was a miracle that she survived. Since Eva had an emergency c-section, the critical birth staff were on hand for the delivery and struggled to get a tube into Cassidy's airway but they managed to do it and it saved her life. Jeremy and Eva have been married for three years and have been together since 2003. They had been trying for a baby for a few years and had saved enough money to cover their bills and expenses while Eva was out on maternity leave. Because of Cassidy's condition Eva will not be able to return to work as Cassidy will need around-the-clock care for the forseeable future. She will be in and out of the hospital for multiple surgeries for years to come. Treacher-Collins Syndrome can cause very mild to severe malformation and deformation of the face and the anatomy within it. She has no viable airway to breathe. There is no passage from her nose to her throat and because her jaw never fully developed, it causes her to choke on her tongue. She will have surgery to repair these but her jaw has no hinge so a jaw distraction can't be done until she grows the bones needed for it. If not, then Dr. Scott will remove a piece of her rib bone and implant it with hopes that it grows. In the meantime, she will has had a tracheotomy so that she can breathe on her own. Since Cassidy can't be fed by mouth until her jaw is fixed, she will be fitted with a feeding tube into her abdomen directly to her stomach. She has a cleft palate and that will be repaired by surgery also. Her earlobes never fully developed and has no ear canals, ear drums or the bones of the inner ear but her left and right cohcleas are intact and the nerves are connected so she does have minimal hearing. She will be fitted with a hearing aid attached to her skull that will work by vibration and transmit sound to her cochlea. The openings of her eyelids are very small but her vision should be OK and she has no cheekbones. Her doctor says she will have to undergo up to fifteen surgeries to correct the effects of TCS on her. To donate to Cassidy please click link and Thank you very much

Braces again today! 🦷❤️ This is Cassidy’s second phase of braces, and I can’t believe how great her teeth look compared to when she first got braces three years ago!
Cassie has a really tiny mouth, so appointments can be challenging for her, but Dr. Cartos always takes such great care of her. The team at Convivial Dental does a lot of suctioning to help keep her comfortable because it’s hard for her to swallow while laying flat, The first phase was all about helping guide her teeth into the right places as they came in, and now we are onto phase two help correct align the adult teeth and help with her over bite ❤️

Look at how crazy the before and after is!!

The best summer yet has officially come to an end. ❤️ We packed so much into these last few months and made memories I will hold onto forever. Cassie is off to high school 🥹, Cam is heading into 6th grade, and Jeremy is officially the 6th grade teacher this year! ❤️📚

Now that they are all back to school I need to clean this house. 😂 Because apparently having the best summer ever comes with a very messy house. 🤣

A few weeks ago, Cassidy had the incredible opportunity to travel to San Diego through the Joe Ebner Scholarship with ConnectMed International. 💙

One of the most special parts of the trip was being surrounded by other families on a similar journey as ours. There’s something so comforting about being with people who just get it without having to explain. The conversations, laughs, hugs, and connections we made are something we’ll always remember.

I’m so grateful Cassidy was given this experience and for the friendships that came from it. Thank you to ConnectMed International and the Joe Ebner Scholarship for bringing these amazing kids and families together and continuing Joe’s mission. 💙

Definitely one of those trips that stays with you long after you come home. 🥰

Just gave birth… ❤️

Nothing could have prepared me for how one little girl would change my heart, my priorities, and my life.
Fourteen years ago today, I met the strongest person I’ve ever known. You have taught me more about courage, resilience, unconditional love, and finding joy in the little things than I could have ever taught you. Being your mom has been the greatest privilege of my life. I would choose you a million times over.
Happy 14th Birthday, Cassidy. You are my greatest blessing, and I couldn’t be prouder of the incredible young woman you’re becoming. I love you more than words will ever be able to say. ❤️

So proud of Cassidy. ❤️ She was chosen for the Joe Ebner Scholarship, which brought us all the way to San Diego! She was determined to swim in the Pacific Ocean and boogie board, even with her trach. Her amazing surf instructors stayed behind her the whole time, keeping her trach out of the water ! 🌊🏄‍♀️

I have been a little slow on posting, but I had to share that my sweet girl graduated from 8th grade in June and will be starting high school this fall! 💙
She will be attending the Classical Academy while also taking the CTE Nursing program. Her dream is to become a NICU or maternity doctor, and if there’s one thing we all know, it’s that nothing stops her. I’m so proud of you, Cassidy! ❤️
