Many teens experience disordered eating, but some are at higher risk than others. This cross-sectional study of over 47,000 youths investigated how childhood hardships related to disordered eating behaviors. Poverty and household mental illness had the strongest links to multiple disordered eating patterns. These patterns were partly explained by depression, anxiety, and food insecurity. These findings may help families and providers identify early risk factors for disordered eating behaviors and offer support and prevention strategies. https://twp.ai/NSZjev

Although it is known that school discipline and policing can harm the mental health of young people, little is known about how these factors affect Latinx teenagers. Eight hundred and thirteen Latinx teenagers were studied to understand how school discipline and policing related to depressive symptoms. Three distinct groups emerged: (1) "less school policing"; (2) "no school discipline/low school policing"; and (3) "more school policing." Latina girls in the most heavily policed group had the highest depressive scores, raising the question of whether carceral school practices harm the mental health of Latinx youth. https://twp.ai/9Oa01i

This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the role of noninvasive brain stimulation in the treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Drawing on data from 33 randomized controlled trial studies with 1,049 participants, the authors found that repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) was associated with improved attention and reduced hyperactivity/impulsivity, while transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) helped enhance inhibitory control and reduce hyperactivity/impulsivity. The effectiveness was linked to which brain region was stimulated. These results suggest that noninvasive brain stimulation may be a valuable treatment option for individuals with ADHD, particularly for those who do not respond well to standard medications. https://twp.ai/ImvedN

This randomized trial of 301 youth aged 12 to 24 at risk for su***de compared standard Zero Su***de quality improvement (ZSQI) care with an added program, stratified stepped-care for su***de prevention (SC-SP), to evaluate its effectiveness in reducing su***de attempt and self-harm risk. SC-SP used structured risk assessments to match patients to appropriate treatments, including dialectical behavioral therapy. While groups did not differ significantly in su***de attempts, the SC-CP intervention was associated with significantly less total self-harm (a combination of su***de attempts and non-suicidal self-injury) and depression, and reported greater patient satisfaction with care. https://twp.ai/bWa6LO

Using Large Language Models to Identify Su***de Risk Factors in Pediatric Emergency Department Chart Notes

Electronic health records (EHR) have been used increasingly to understand mental health and su***de risk, yet work is relatively limited in young children.
