Photographer Kevin Carter died on this day, July the 27th in 1994.

Carter is shown here alongside his best known image, an image which won him a Pulitzer prize in 1994.

His 1993 image is of a boy named Kong Nyong and depicted an ongoing famine in Sudan.

Kevin, one of the photographers immortalised in the book 'The Bang-Bang club', committed su***de a few months after winning the Pulitzer, in his su***de note he wrote:

'I am haunted by the vivid memories of killings & corpses & anger & pain ... of starving or wounded children, of trigger-happy madmen, often police, of killer executioners'

Kong died thirteen years after the image was taken.

Kevin died one year after the image was taken, he was 33.

The roof was foreign coverage, and then it burned through the floors and now we’re into the foundation.” Statehouse coverage, city hall reporting—accountability journalism of any kind is going up in smoke."

Press Freedom in the United States takes another hit.

Washington, D.C., July 16, 2026—The Committee to Protect Journalists strongly condemns the Trump administration’s decision to impose new visa restrictions on international correspondents, abandoning a decades-old policy enabling foreign journalists to report from the United States without fear that their visa status could be weaponized against them.

"Press freedom group The Committee to Protect Journalists is reviewing how it identifies and records journalists killed in war zones.

"The move follows the CPJ wrongly naming combatants as slain reporters in its database for the Israel–Gaza war after the militant groups Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad published obituaries unmasking as fighters individuals previously listed as journalists. Members of the media, and especially war correspondents, are protected in war zones by international law if they do not actively engage in hostilities."

The Committee to Protect Journalists says Palestinian militant groups published obituaries for fighters earlier listed as reporters, prompting the removal of their names.

These five murdered journalists are among the victims close to whom for GJS whom we will never forget. But we also cannot forget the more than 200 journalists killed in Gaza over less than the past three years, along with other journalists killed worldwide.

Eight years ago today, five Capital Gazette staff members — Gerald Fischman, Rob Hiaasen, John McNamara, Rebecca Smith and Wendi Winters — were murdered and others were wounded in the deadliest single attack on journalists in U.S. history.

Today, we remember their lives, honor their legacy and reaffirm the importance of a free press.
We will never forget.
