Skills on the Hill LLC

Skills on the Hill LLC We provide private therapy in our Capitol Hill and Arlington clinics for infants through middle schoo

At Skills on the Hill, we treat the whole child by considering the environment, the child's strengths and weaknesses, and what is meaningful to the child. We know that the child will do best when he or she is comfortable and motivated, so we disguise everything as play. At our pediatric occupational therapy clinic we address motor delays, visual motor and perceptual deficits, weaknesses with daily

living, self-help skills, difficulties with play and social skills, attention issues, and sensory processing and modulation disorders. For media inquiries, please contact [email protected].

Some children start talking early. Others take a little more time. But when you are waiting for those first words, it can be hard to know what is simply part of your child’s individual pace and what might be worth discussing further.

Spoken words are only one part of communication. How your child understands language, uses gestures, interacts during play, responds to you, and tries to communicate can all help paint a bigger picture of their development.

Our free Speech Delay or Just a Late Talker? guide gives parents a simple way to better understand what to look for and includes everyday ideas that can support communication at home.

Comment “FIRST WORDS” below and we’ll send the guide directly to you.

And remember: communication is more than words. Every attempt to connect counts.

Wondering what a pediatric therapy evaluation actually looks like? 🧩 A child’s evaluation is about more than checking milestones. Their therapist takes time to learn about their strengths, challenges, daily routines, and the activities that matter most to your family.

Depending on the type of therapy, the evaluation may look at movement, communication, fine motor skills, sensory processing, feeding, play, or other everyday skills. Most importantly, it gives the therapist a better understanding of your child as a whole. ❤️

Those little hands are learning A LOT.

From reaching for a favorite toy to holding a crayon and eventually forming those first letters, fine motor development plays an important role in so many everyday childhood skills.

As children grow, their hands and fingers gradually develop the coordination and control they need for play, feeding, dressing, drawing, writing, and becoming more independent.

But what might those skills look like at different ages, and how can you encourage them through everyday play?

We've put together a FREE Fine Motor Milestones Guide for ages 0–5, with a simple age-by-age overview PLUS easy ideas you can try at home.

Comment “LITTLE HANDS” below and we'll send the guide directly to you!

And remember: little hands build big skills one small step at a time.

Every child develops at their own pace, but sometimes, you may notice something that makes you wonder, “Is this something I should be concerned about?”

From first words and gestures to walking, pretend play, following directions, and interacting with others, there are developmental signs parents can keep an eye on as their child grows.

A red flag doesn't automatically mean something is wrong, and it isn't a diagnosis. Instead, it can be a helpful signal that it's worth starting a conversation with your child's pediatrician or therapist.

We've created a Red Flags by Age: Parent's Quick-Check Guide (0–5) to help you know what to look for at different stages: from 12 months through age 5.

Want a copy of the full guide? Comment “MILESTONES” below and we'll send it directly to you!

And remember: trust your gut. You know your child best.

🍎 Many children go through phases of picky eating, but persistent feeding challenges may be a sign of something more. If your child has an extremely limited diet, struggles with certain textures, experiences frequent gagging, or mealtimes have become stressful for the whole family, a feeding evaluation may be beneficial. Every child deserves to feel confident and comfortable around food, and the right support can help make mealtimes more enjoyable. 💬 Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a motor speech disorder that affects how the brain plans and coordinates the movements needed for speech. Children with CAS know what they want to say, but their brains have difficulty sending the correct signals to the muscles used for talking.

Some early signs may include limited babbling, difficulty combining sounds into words, inconsistent speech errors, or speech that is difficult for others to understand. Early identification and individualized therapy can make a meaningful difference in helping children build clear, confident communication.
