🇺🇸 A 10-DAY ALASKA ROAD TRIP ITINERARY
Glaciers, grizzly bears, humpback whales, midnight sun and some of the most dramatic landscapes on earth.
Here is exactly how to spend 10 days road tripping through Alaska 👇

📍 Day 1: Anchorage to Talkeetna
Start in Anchorage and head north toward Talkeetna, stopping at Mirror Lake, Eklutna Lake, and Reflections Lake along the way. All three are worth getting out of the car for. Stay at Talkeetna Wilderness Lodge, a quiet cabin property with bonfires and s'mores in the evening.
📍 Day 2: Denali National Park
Only 30% of visitors ever see Mount Denali clearly so if the sky is clear, drop everything and get there. Hike the Mountain Vista Trail, the Savage River Loop, and the Horseshoe Lake Trail. Six million acres of wilderness with grizzly bears, wolves and moose roaming freely.
📍 Day 3: Hatcher Pass
Drive through one of Alaska's most beautiful mountain passes. Visit the gold rush era Independence Mine, walk to Gold Cord Lake (still partly frozen in late June and completely stunning for it), and take in the sweeping alpine tundra views.
📍 Day 4: McCarthy Road and Wrangell Mountain Air
Drive the 60-mile gravel McCarthy Road into Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. Then book the 90-minute flightseeing tour with Wrangell Mountain Air. Snow-covered peaks, massive glaciers and ice fields from above. One of the best experiences in Alaska, full stop.
📍 Day 5: Copper Center to Valdez
Stop at the Wrangell-St. Elias Visitor Center, walk the Copper River Overlook trail, and drive the Richardson Highway through Keystone Canyon, one of the most dramatic gorges in Alaska. Bridal Veil Falls, Horsetail Falls and Rudleston Falls are all roadside stops along the way. End the day at Worthington Glacier and Thompson Pass.
📍 Day 6: Valdez
Walk the Dock Point Trail for views over Harbor Cove, kayak on Valdez Glacier Lake among floating icebergs, and hike to April Bowl at Hatcher Pass. Spend the night in Wasilla in one of the tiny houses at FLY8MA.
📍 Day 7: Seward Highway to Homer
Drive the Seward Highway south, one of the most scenic drives in the country. Stop at Beluga Point, Turnagain Pass, Tern Lake and Kenai Lake. End the day at Homer Spit, a 4.5-mile gravel bar jutting into Kachemak Bay with sea otters, seabirds and stunning ocean views.
📍 Day 8: Bear Viewing and Exit Glacier
Take a boat tour to Lake Clark National Park for bear viewing up close, bears foraging for mussels along the shore with no fear of people. Then hike the Exit Glacier trails in Kenai Fjords National Park and watch the blue ice up close.
📍 Day 9: Kenai Fjords Glacier and Wildlife Cruise
Book the 7.5 hour Major Marine Tours glacier and wildlife cruise from Seward. Humpback whales, Dall's porpoise, sea otters, sea lions, harbor seals, puffins and the incredible Aialik Glacier. One of the best days of the entire trip. End the evening with a walk on the Two Lakes Trail.
📍 Day 10: Back to Anchorage
Hike the Palmer Lakes Trail on the way back, a remote trail to two glacial lakes through open tundra. Stop at Portage Lake and hike the Portage Pass Trail for the only established trail view of Portage Glacier before heading back to Anchorage.
