Canadian partnerships strengthening child health in Lao PDR ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿฅ

Canada thanks two Canadian charitable partners, the Ptarmigan Foundation and RAD-AID International for their generous and longstanding support to the Lao Friends Hospital for Children (LFHC) in Lao PDR. Together, their work is helping improve neonatal care, medical imaging, and clinical training for health workers across Laos. These advances reflect years of sustained collaboration focused on both lifesaving care for newborns and stronger diagnostic capacity for pediatric patients. ๐Ÿฉป

Through hands on engagement by Canadian experts in Laos, including training, donated equipment, and long term knowledge exchange, Ptarmigan and RAD-AID are strengthening LFHCโ€™s capacity to deliver quality care for children and families. Their work demonstrates the tangible impact Canadians are making in Laos ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

Today, on the International Day of the Midwife, we celebrate the essential role midwives play in delivering high-quality, compassionate care to mothers and newborns worldwide.

RAD-AID International is proud to work alongside Canadian Association of Midwives and Philips CSR to expand access to education and point-of-care ultrasound for midwives in underserved communities in Canada. Together, we are helping strengthen clinical capacity, support evidence-based care, informed choice, and improve maternal and neonatal outcomes.
This collaboration reflects whatโ€™s possible when global partners come together with a shared commitment to health equity.

We believe that a thriving midwifery workforce is essential to stronger health systems worldwide.

In February 2026, RAD-AID South Pacific Program Director, Jo McCann and Sonographer Volunteer, Penelope Wilkinson traveled to Vanuatu National Hospital in Port Vila, Vanuatu to deliver the second workshop in the Certificate in Fundamental Ultrasound (CFU) programme.

RAD-AID thanks the Pasifika Medical Association (PMA) for their support in this volunteer trip.

โ€œA wide range of ultrasound examinations was performed, consistent with the expected general workload at the facility.

Notable improvement in the local team's technique and systematic assessment of biliary structures was observed compared to approximately six months prior, reflecting good skill retention and ongoing development between visits.โ€

In February 2026, RAD-AID Breast Imaging Program Manager Matt Burger and Volunteers Samantha Jayasinghe and Ashish Patel traveled to Mulago National Referral Hospital and the Uganda Cancer Institute in Kampala, Uganda for educational collaboration and clinical capacity building.

The multidisciplinary team consisted of radiologists and radiology fellows subspecialized in emergency, neuroradiology, and breast imaging, along with an OB-GYN resident and an anesthesiologist, predominantly from Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

From Matt Burger, MD:

โ€œDuring the visit, we delivered a series of academic sessions and hands-on training focused on breast imaging and cancer diagnosis. I delivered a Grand Rounds lecture on Breast MRI BI-RADS updates, reviewing current standards in MRI interpretation and reporting. I also piloted a dedicated breast ultrasound teaching curriculum I helped spearhead in collaboration with RAD-AID, providing structured education for radiology residents and radiography students/technicians on breast ultrasound fundamentals, lesion characterization, and practical scanning techniques.

This collaboration focused on strengthening imaging education, optimizing imaging protocols, and evaluating innovative technologies that could expand access to imaging technology in resource-limited settings.โ€
