Vacation is my favorite thing in life. I love so much about it. The novelty of exploring a new place. Revisiting favorite places that feel like second homes. Relaxing and recharging my batteries.

I was lucky to have parents that instilled a love of travel in me and my sisters. They took us all over. We learned how to navigate airports, survive road trips, and the magic of a good hotel pool.

I’ve learned a few tips and tricks for traveling while neurodiverse. If you’re neurospicy, travel can dysregulate you very quickly. Here’s a few things I’ve learned over the years that have helped me self-regulate while traveling all over the world. These little things can give your nervous system an anchor when everything gets to be too much.

1) Bring a Roku - Seriously. This is my #1 travel tip. Most hotel room TVs have HDMI inputs. All you have to do is plug it in, connect to the hotel Wi-Fi, and boom. You’ve got access to all your comfort shows, movies, and videos.

2) Bring your favorite snack - Make sure you have a stash of your go-to comfort or safe food. It will provide a little piece of normalcy amid all the new things you’re surrounded by.

3) Take the direct flight - Nothing will make a neurodiverse person lose their mind faster than a connecting flight mishap. It will be the absolute only thing they can think about until that second flight is actually in the air. If you can afford it, it is worth your sanity to take the direct flight.

4) Bring a sleep mask - Trying to fall asleep in a room with different light than you’re used to or in a shared room with others turning lights on and off is hard. A sleep mask provides consistent darkness so you can sleep and recharge for tomorrow’s adventures. To avoid sensory issues when wearing the mask, I recommend one made with super smooth fabric and little “cups” for your eyes so the mask doesn’t touch the eyelids.

5) Take breaks - It’s really tempting to want to see and do everything. Taking 2-3 breaks in a cool, quiet place every day can help you reset your nervous system before it gets overwhelmed. You can almost always find a shaded spot somewhere to sit for 15-20 minutes and have a snack and water.

There are my Top 5 Neurospicy Travel Tips. Which one makes your top 5? Are there any you would add?

Remember, your regular adjustment is the most important thing you can do to regulate your nervous system.

My ADHD brain both craves and hates routine. How’s that for a conundrum? Too much routine — I revolt. Too little routine — I feel adrift. And if you change my routine — forget about it. Sound familiar?

Summer brings lots of changes to your routine. Hot weather, no school, altered work schedules, and vacations can all dysregulate your nervous system. As you settle into your summer routine, you may find yourself or your kids struggling to adapt. You might notice signs like trouble sleeping, stomachaches, headaches, or being more irritable.

This is especially true if you and/or your kids are neurodiverse. Neurodiverse individuals have a complicated relationship with routine. You may be heavily reliant on it to keep your nervous system regulated. Put you in a strange hotel room outside Yellowstone National Park two hours past your bedtime without access to your favorite YouTube channel and cue the meltdown! (No, that’s never happened to me. What are you implying?)

Regular chiropractic adjustments are the #1 thing you can do to support your nervous system regulation. It’s why I love caring for my fellow neurodiverse women so much! A regulated nervous system is more adaptable to changes in routine, environment, food, and more. Better adaptability means fewer meltdowns and a much more enjoyable summer.

Ready to give yourself a calm, regulated, and adaptable summer this year? Call us and get started today!
