Wilfred Cyril Ament of Waukon, Iowa, passed away on Friday, August 14, 2026, after a lengthy illness.
A memorial to celebrate Will’s life will be held let the Empty Nest Winery in Waukon, Iowa, on Friday, October 16, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. to remember our friend who will be greatly missed.

Life reflections as written by Will Wilfred (Will) Cyril Ament first saw sunshine in Eastern Iowa on April 26, 1938. He was the youngest of six, and the first one to be born in a hospital, rather than at home. He grew up on a farm in Delaware County near Hopkinton, IA, and was in charge of chicken chores until his brother graduated from high school, when he moved up in rank and was put in charge of the cows and all the milking duties. He remembered the house filled with music, card playing and laughter. Playing ball with friends, skiing, skating, playing cards, it was a very full and active life. He had fond memories from these times. There was always steady work on the farm and hands needed to help his Mother in the picking and preparing of produce from the garden for winter storage. Most of the work, when completed, was not seen as drudgery,
but rather, brought a sense of satisfaction. Will attended St Paul’s, a small Catholic school in Worthington, IA. He graduated from high school in 1956 and went to Loras College for two years. From this point you may get dizzy following him around the globe. He transferred to a college in Glen Ellyn, IL where he received his B.A. in philosophy. He then went to Maryknoll College in Ossining, NY, where he received an MA in theology. He continued his studies at Scranton University, Scranton, PA., where he obtained his MA in American Literature.

In the late sixties he taught for four years in small private high schools and colleges located in Scranton, PA, Chesterfield, MO and Glen Elllyn, IL In 1969 he went to Tanzania, Africa where he worked with a Catholic Missionary Society until 1978. While in Tanzania, he managed to camp overnight several times with the lions in the Serengeti Plains, but regretfully never found the time to climb Mt Kilimanjaro! In 1978 he returned to the states and moved to Decorah, Iowa where he worked in his brother’s cabinet and woodworking shop for a short period of time. In 1979 he was hired by the Iowa Department of Human Services in the Child Protective Services Division. During this time he reconstructed a log cabin and cultivated a walnut tree farm near Volney, IA.

It was not until 1984 that Will settled more permanently in NE Iowa. He worked for the Allamakee and Winneshiek County Assessor’s offices as Deputy and Assessor. In 1985 he married Mary Gorzeman at the Little Brown Church. She was the director of TASC, in Waukon, IA. who had several apartments that they rented out. Will rented one of them for several years so some of Will’s “friends” thought it rather clever on his part to marry his landlady. In 1996 Will began full time as a private Real Estate Appraiser, working in four counties in NE Iowa,. His office was in his home and any appraisal mistakes were blamed on his English Bulldog, Stogie. He retired from appraisal work in 2018 after 34 years in the profession. Although Will did settle down in NE Iowa, it did not mean he stayed home. He and Mary traveled to over forty countries. Always looking for a unique active adventure. They bicycled many trails in the States and rode several bike trips in Europe. The ocean! Will and Mary both loved it very much. They were certified advanced scuba divers, and both logged over a thousand dives each. For thirty-plus years, their home away from home was the little Dutch Island of
Bonaire.

Will had a special place in his heart for the Waukon Public Library. He loved reading and was very proud to volunteer his organizational skills to the book sales project. A donation to a library near and dear to you would be a memorial Will would appreciate. Will was very fond of Henry David Thoreau. Like Thoreau, Will too, went into the woods and built his cabin. What Will achieved in life is to be judged by others, but his aspirations were somewhat similar to Thoreau: “I went to the woods because I wanted to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.” The furrow Will plowed though life was not very straight nor always level, But as it moved forward, that plow turned over excitement, friends, deep pleasures, and appreciation of the riches and depth of the world and life around us.

He will miss you and thanks you for sharing your life with him, His remains will be cremated and his ashes scattered in the Caribbean Sea near the island of Bonaire... a place he dearly loved.

Will was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Mary Ament, his three brothers: Donald, Leo and Leonard, and, two sisters: Grace (Kagel) and Pauline (Guise).

He is survived by his loving wife, his cousins, nieces and nephews, sister-in-law, and friends.

Online condolences may be directed to the family at

Heaven just got a little rowdier as Penny Marie (Pullen) Tully, 67, passed away at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines peacefully and surrounded by her family on August 13th, 2026.

A visitation will be held August 29th from 10am-12pm at SS John and Paul Church in Altoona. Eulogy will be read at 11:45 followed by mass at 12.

Penny was born May 1, 1959, to Charles and Beverly (Allen) Pullen in Dubuque, Iowa and the world was forever changed. She had her first date with her future husband Mark who she spent 50+ years with on April 1. 1975 at the laugh olympics (what foreshadowing that was). Penny was united in marriage to Mark Tully on October 6, 1979.
Penny was one of a kind. She never met a stranger she didn't know, a party she didn't want to be at or a smile that didn't brighten up the darkest of rooms. Penny enjoyed spending time with loved ones, collecting angels, going to the casino, being the life of the party, her strong faith, a cold b**r and being an overall really good human. She loved playing fantasy football, bingo, St Patrick's day and giving her granddaughter treats that she wasn’t supposed to. Penny's joyful spirit was evident to all those who knew her. To know her was simply to love her.

Penny is survived by her husband Mark Tully, daughter Lynsey (Nick) Ludwig, bonus daughter Sophia Brodie and her beloved granddaughter Caroline. Brothers Chuck (Theresa) Pullen, Steve (Sharon) Pullen, and one of her dearest friends her brother Jim (Mary Jo) Pullen along with many other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Charles and Beverly Pullen, sister Patricia Wissink, In-laws John and Margaret Tully, Mike Nebel and Beth Tully.

Memorials can be made out to the family to designate at a later time. In lieu of flowers, please go out and do something you enjoy. Go to karaoke night, buy someone a b**r, play a game of cards and have the best time doing it. Live your life so fully and beautifully to celebrate the way Penny lived hers. Cheers!

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our sister, Jacolyn Rae Bollivar, on July 20. Born to John and Marge Bollivar on March 4, 1961, Jackie grew up in Prophetstown, Illinois, and graduated from Prophetstown-Lyndon High School in 1979. Following a courageous battle with COPD and recent heart issues, she spent her final weeks at the Good Samaritan Society Nursing Home in West Union, Iowa.

Jackie was the last Bollivar girl to wander over to the Hawkeye State. In true fashion, she made the move in May of 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. She loved the quiet life she built in Fort Atkinson, Iowa, surrounded by her beloved dogs—first her miniature dachshunds, Buster and Millie, and later her toy poodle, Terrence (aka Big T). Her pups were her absolute world.

Jackie brought a fun, spunky energy to life. She was fueled by Diet Mountain Dew, loved nothing more than finding a good bargain, and cherished lunch dates with those she cared about. She had a famous sweet tooth for ice cream and homemade treats, and her family always looked forward to the delicious apple pies she lovingly baked for gatherings.
Above all, Jackie loved spending time with her family and was immensely proud of her nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Marjorie (Betts) Bollivar, and her beloved dogs Pekin, Buster, and Millie. She is survived by her loyal pup Terrence; her sisters, Johnna Bollivar (Mark Ingram) and Jaydeane Bollivar Berns (Mike Johnson); as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and a great-nephew due in December.

A private service will be held for the immediate family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Northeast Iowa Humane Society, Decorah, Iowa, in honor of Jackie's deep love for her animals.

Grace E. Calvert

October 14, 1965 – July 7, 2026

Grace Elizabeth Calvert of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died on July 7, 2026, following a courageous battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. She received treatment at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City and at St. Lukes Unity Point Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Her final days were spent in the kind and compassionate care of the St. Luke’s Hospice.

Grace was the youngest of seven children, was a musician, fierce animal rights advocate, and staunch defender of democracy. Grace graduated from Canton MO R-V High School in 1984; she graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1988 with a degree in Music Performance.

She was married on August 11, 1990 to her beloved and devoted husband, Charles "Andy" Harris; they shared 36 years of marriage. Their life together was marked by laughter and an enduring partnership that those around them admired.

Music – specifically the french horn -- was one of the great joys of Grace and Andy’s shared life along with caring for many cats over the years. Grace played horn with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra in Little Rock, AR, and The Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon Orchestra, in Monterrey Mexico, Nuevo Leon.

Grace is survived by her husband, her brother Sam Calvert of St. Cloud, MN, and four sisters: Anne Whitehead of Independence MO, Jane Herring of Effingham IL, Kerri Calvert of Normal IL, Ruth Tamulonis of Murrell’s Inlet, SC; and by nephews Isaac Faamoe and Nuusa Faamoe. She was an organ donor. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Jean Calvert of Canton MO and her sister, Susan Calvert of Ballwin MO and nephew Max Tamulonis.

A celebration of life will be held on October 3 2026 from 2 to 4 pm in the Canton (Mo.) Methodist Church and in Cedar Rapids in the future but the date for Cedar Rapids is not determined yet.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Orchestra Iowa (link: https://ticket.artsiowa.com/donate/contribute1 ) or the Cedar Valley Humane Society.

Grace will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Her memory — and her music — will live on in the hearts of her family and friends.

Paul Charles Wilson, of Marion, Iowa, passed away on July 22, 2026, at age 54. A celebration of life is being planned for the near future. Announcement will be posted on Facebook.

Our lovable, sweet, Paul Charles Wilson, passed from this world on July 22, 2026.

Paul’s life was cut way too short when he was taken from us by metastatic pancreatic cancer at the age of 54. Paul is survived by his wife Ashley, sons Brecken and Wyatt Cassady, brother Wayne Wilson, sister Amy Wilson-Novak (Mike), mother-in-law Kelly Ross (Marty), sister-in-law Kiley Odegard (Wade). Paul is also survived by a special Goddaughter (Harmony), and many special nieces and nephews. Last, but certainly not least, Paul is survived by eight cats, which is one more than they were legally allowed, per his mother-in-law in his wedding vows. Paul was preceded in death by his parents Gail and Paul Wilson, sister-in-law Malissa Anderson, and many other special relatives.

The first chapter of Paul’s life was spent on the West side of Cedar Rapids, where he attended Harrison Elementary, Roosevelt Middle, and Jefferson High Schools. To say Paul was an active participant in life is an understatement. He started working young, riding his bike to deliver the Penny Saver. He worked at the Elks Lodge as a cook, and working bingo. Growing up in the Timecheck Neighborhood, everyone wanted to hang out with Paul. He and his friends spent hours playing in the river, fishing, tubing, riding bikes (all the way to Westdale Mall!), and causing more than their fair share of mischief. Paul’s friends can attest to the elaborate tales of adventures by the Cedar River, adventures that will now be cemented as treasured memories. After Paul graduated in 1990, he bartended at his mom’s bar, called Nobody’s Perfect, in Czech Village. The bar became a really important place for Paul, as it allowed him to enjoy music and libations with family and friends. He even continued to work at the bar while also working days at City Carton (now known as Republic Services). At around this time in his life, Paul began to realize that his partying was becoming problematic. He knew that in order to get sober and clean, he had to put some miles between him and the past. He left Cedar Rapids behind in roughly 2009.

The second chapter of Paul’s life was spent in Rock Island, the place he chose to rebuild himself as a sober person. He worked as a forklift driver for Jacobson Warehousing (now known as Matcon). In this chapter of life, he opened his heart to help care for a friend’s daughter, Lilly Merritt-Smith. Paul had an impactful, nurturing relationship with young Lilly, as he helped raise her for the first six years of her life. This experience paved the way for his next chapter.

Chapter three brought Paul from Rock Island back to his roots in Cedar Rapids, after meeting Ashley in January of 2016, through the Plenty of Fish app. There was an instant connection, and they fell for each other, hook, line and sinker. The couple moved in together May of 2016. It was a highlight of Paul’s life to accept and love Ashley’s children, Brecken and Wyatt. In 2019, he became “Pop-Pop” to his goddaughter, Harmony. Paul and Ashley were married October 10, 2020, at the height of Covid. The relationship was full of comedic moments (many of them naughty, some of them gross), all of them special and none of them dull. Although Paul could be a diva, he treated his wife like a queen. He was a diehard Dallas Cowboys fan and a staunch UFC supporter. Paul was a card shark, and he earned the nickname “The Dam” playing games of “Sets & Runs” with family. He loved to play bingo. He loved fishing and rocking out with friends. He was an ice cream fiend with a problematic sweet tooth. He was called “Big Cup” because of his addiction to drinking Diet Mountain Dew out of his GIANT 64 oz BIG CUP. He was working his way up to the 100 oz size.

Paul lived life at his own pace and on his own terms (as long as Ashley approved). With v**e in-hand, Paul was known to talk your ear off, and he never knew a stranger. He loved hard and played hard. He was generous to a fault. He would give you the shirt off his back or his last dollar, without hesitation. We were so lucky to have had him in our lives. He will be sorely missed.

For pet safety, in lieu of flowers, donations may be mailed to the family at the following address:

Linda Gettle Schmidt (December 3, 1947 - January 10, 2026)

Linda Myrtle Gettle Schmidt, 78, died peacefully on Saturday, January 10, 2026.

Born December 3, 1947, in Vinton, Iowa, to Herbert and Helen (Cepelak) Gettle, Linda was raised on her mother's family farm near Elberon, where she developed a lifelong love of flowers, animals, and country living.

After high school, Linda attended the University of Minnesota before transferring to St. Paul Bible College. While attending classes, she worked as a waitress and met Richard Schmidt. They were married on March 15, 1969, and had two children, Kristin and Brian. Linda and Richard later divorced in 1987.

In 1984, Linda returned to St. Paul Bible College and completed her bachelor's degree in 1985 while working two jobs and raising her children. She later pursued master's studies in Christian education at Bethel Seminary and in gerontology.

Linda dedicated much of her career to Christian Education, serving as a Christian educator at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran and Knox Presbyterian in Minneapolis, Christ Lutheran in Glencoe, and Bethlehem United Methodist in Hutchinson. Later in life, she found great joy working as a librarian at Fisher Public School and as a paraprofessional at Schroeder Middle School.

In 1991, Linda met Vern Damm, and they were married on September 12, 1992. Together they settled on an eleven-acre farm near Stewart, Minnesota, which Linda lovingly restored and filled with gardens and animals. She often referred to it as her dream home. Linda and Vern later divorced in 2009.

In 2013, Linda moved to Grand Forks, North Dakota, to be closer to her grandchildren. In August 2025, Linda and her daughter Kristin moved to Calmar, Iowa, to be near her son and daughter-in-law, who had relocated to Decorah earlier that summer. Linda's faith sustained her throughout her life and during her battle with ovarian cancer.

She is survived by her children, Kristin Schmidt of Calmar, Iowa, and Brian (Kristen) Larsen-Schmidt of Decorah, Iowa; her grandchildren, Gracia and Micah Larsen-Schmidt; and her siblings, Doug (Christy) Gettle of Duluth, Jeanne (Jon) Larson of Westby, Richard (Linda) Gettle of Elberon, and Randy Gettle of North Mankato. She was preceded in death by her parents.

During her final week, all four of her siblings were able to visit. On her last night, she was surrounded by Scripture, prayers, and songs from her children, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren as her family entrusted her to her heavenly Father while her beloved cat Albert rested in her lap.

Linda was strong, intelligent, hardworking, resilient, stubborn, funny, loving, and faithful. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Following Linda's wishes, her ashes will be scattered on the family farm on July 18, 2026.
