🔥 Wildfire smoke doesn't just affect your lungs- it can affect your voice, too!!

Your voice depends on healthy breathing and well-hydrated, flexible tissues throughout your airway. When air quality declines, smoke particles can irritate the nose, throat, and lungs, making speaking feel more difficult or uncomfortable.

While the wildfire smoke is in the air over the next few days, you may notice the following:

🎤 A scratchy or hoarse voice
😮‍💨 Increased coughing or throat clearing
💨 Shortness of breath when talking
🥤 A dry or irritated throat
😣 Vocal fatigue after speaking

To help protect your voice while air quality is poor, here’s some advice:

✔️ Stay indoors when possible and keep windows closed.

✔️ Stay well hydrated throughout the day to support healthy voice production.

✔️ Use an air purifier or high-quality HVAC filter if available.

✔️ Reduce prolonged or unnecessary voice use if your throat feels irritated. If you have to use your voice for extended periods, consider taking short voice breaks where you can throughout the day, and avoid speaking over loud background noise whenever possible.

✔️ Avoid excessive throat clearing, which can further irritate the vocal folds. Instead, try taking a sip of water, swallowing, or using a gentle cough if needed.

✔️ If you need to be outdoors for an extended period, follow local public health recommendations regarding well-fitting masks (such as an N95 when appropriate).

Your voice starts with your breath. Taking care of your respiratory system helps support healthy communication, too.

Stay safe, everyone- and give your voice a little extra care while the smoke is in the air! 🧡

📱✨ Tech Accessibility Spotlight: Android Modes

Did you know your Android phone can automatically change its settings based on your routine?

Modes can help reduce distractions, simplify transitions, and make technology work better for your daily life. Whether you're managing symptoms of ADHD, recovering from a brain injury, navigating cognitive changes, or simply looking for ways to stay focused, small accessibility features like this can make a big difference.

Accessibility isn't one-size-fits-all- sometimes it's about reducing mental load and letting your technology support your goals instead of competing for your attention.

💬 What technology challenge would you like to see featured next in the Tech Accessibility Spotlight series?

Sometimes the hardest part is knowing where to start.

Maybe:
🎤 Your voice feels tired, strained, or hoarse after a long day.
🏳️‍⚧️ Your voice doesn't feel like an authentic reflection of who you are.
🗣️ Communication feels more difficult than it used to.
🍽️ Eating and drinking don't feel as comfortable or enjoyable as they once did.
🧠 You're noticing changes in thinking and processing that are affecting daily life, and aren't sure what support is available.

That’s why I offer free, 15-minute consultations- before asking questions, you don't need a diagnosis. You don't need to know exactly what service you need. And you don't need to decide whether therapy is right for you.

We’ll talk about all of that together.

💬 Comment CONNECT below and I'll send you more information about scheduling a consultation and what to expect.

No pressure. No commitment. Just a conversation.

🏳️‍🌈 Reflecting on Point Pride this weekend and feeling incredibly grateful for the experience!

It was so meaningful to connect with members of the community, meet other local organizations and providers, and have conversations about communication, identity, accessibility, and affirming care.

One of the most important things to me as a clinician is helping create spaces where people feel safe, respected, empowered, and able to express themselves authentically.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth, shared conversations with us, and helped make the event feel so welcoming and meaningful. 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈

And a special thank you to Plover River Counseling for sharing the experience alongside Vivera SLP!

🌈 Happy Pride Month from Vivera SLP LLC!

Pride Month means a lot to me both personally and professionally. Over the years, I’ve seen how deeply identity, communication, safety, and self-expression can impact a person’s confidence, mental health, relationships, and ability to fully participate in everyday life.

One of the reasons I created Vivera SLP LLC was to build a practice where people feel respected, supported, and empowered to communicate authentically as themselves.

I strongly believe every individual deserves the right to express themselves freely and to feel safe doing so. Whether through gender-affirming voice therapy or simply creating affirming healthcare spaces, I’m grateful to support care that prioritizes autonomy, dignity, authenticity, and compassion.

This month and every month, I’m committed to continuing to learn from, advocate for, and support the LGBTQ+ community. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Voice is made up of many different features working together- like pitch, resonance, brightness, prosody, and intonation. These elements all shape how a voice feels, functions, and is perceived.

In gender-affirming voice therapy, the goal isn’t to force someone into a “correct” voice. It’s to safely explore voice and communication in a way that feels authentic, sustainable, and aligned with each person’s goals and identity.

Voice can be deeply connected to:
🎤 Self-expression
🧠 Confidence
💬 Communication
✨ Identity

At Vivera SLP LLC, gender-affirming voice therapy focuses on vocal health, exploration, autonomy, and authentic communication.
