How much fall cleanup is really necessary?

Many of us have been taught to cut everything back, rake every leaf, and leave the garden looking tidy before winter. But those same stems, leaves, and seed heads may provide important habitat for native bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects.

In this episode of The Evergreen Thumb, I talk with an entomologist and WSU Extension Master Gardener volunteer from Chelan-Douglas County about what happens to pollinators after summer ends, where bees spend the winter, and how gardeners can balance fall maintenance with supporting wildlife.

You'll learn:
🌿 Where bees go in winter
🌿 Which garden materials provide valuable habitat
🌿 When fall cleanup makes senseβ€”and when it can wait
🌿 Simple steps to make your garden more pollinator-friendly

πŸ’§πŸ‹ Refresh Your Water This Summer! πŸ“πŸ₯’πŸŒΏ

Staying hydrated doesn't have to be boring! Infused water is a simple and delicious way to add natural flavor to your water without added sugars.

Try some of these refreshing combinations:
πŸ“ Strawberry + Basil
πŸ‹ Lemon + Mint
πŸ₯’ Cucumber + Lime
🫐 Blueberry + Lemon
🍊 Orange + Raspberry

To make infused water:
πŸ’§ Fill a pitcher with cold water.
πŸ“ Add your favorite fruits, herbs, or vegetables.
🧊 Refrigerate for 2–4 hours to let the flavors blend.
πŸ₯€ Pour over ice and enjoy!

πŸ«πŸ“ Berry Season is Here! πŸ“πŸ«

Nothing says summer like fresh-picked berries! Whether you're gathering strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, or blackberries from your garden, a local farmers market, or your favorite U-pick farm, now is the perfect time to enjoy nature's sweetest harvest.

One delicious way to preserve that fresh berry flavor is by making Berry Chia Jam! 🌿 Chia seeds naturally thicken the jam while adding fiber and omega-3 fatsβ€”no pectin required. Spread it on whole-grain toast, swirl it into yogurt, spoon it over oatmeal, or use it as a topping for pancakes and waffles.

✨ Simple ingredients.
✨ Fresh summer flavor.
✨ A nutritious way to enjoy berry season!
