🧠 Want to learn more about protecting your brain and reducing your risk of Alzheimer’s disease?

Add this one to your reading list: The End of Alzheimer’s: The First Program to Prevent and Reverse Cognitive Decline by Dale Bredesen, MD

Dr. Bredesen explores Alzheimer’s and cognitive decline through a broader lens, looking at factors such as metabolic health, inflammation, insulin resistance, nutrition, sleep, hormones, exercise and other lifestyle factors that may influence long term brain health.

One of my biggest takeaways? Brain health deserves attention long before memory problems begin.

We cannot control every risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease, but there are modifiable factors associated with cognitive health that we can start addressing today. Prevention and proactive brain health matter. 🧠💜

📚 The End of Alzheimer’s is available in hardcover, paperback, ebook and audiobook formats and can be purchased through major booksellers, including Penguin Random House and other retailers.

This is NOT a sponsored post. I simply believe education is one of the most powerful tools we have when it comes to taking a proactive approach to our health.

Interested in learning more about your own brain health, cognitive performance and Alzheimer’s risk? Talk with a qualified healthcare professional about evidence based prevention strategies and what may be appropriate for you.

Yes, I know…sometimes getting my workout in means taking a little time away from my family, work and everything else that needs my attention. 🏋🏼‍♀️

But I’ve learned that ME TIME ISN’T WASTED TIME! 💁🏻‍♀️

For me, strength training is one of those things I do for myself that supports so many areas of my health, including my brain.

Research suggests resistance training may support cognitive health, including executive function, working memory and processing speed. It may also support neuroplasticity and healthy brain function. I encourage you to copy the below link into your browser and learn more: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/42508500/

And the benefits go beyond cognition. Taking time to move, get stronger, reset mentally and do something for yourself can be an important part of taking care of your overall health.

So yes, sometimes I choose the workout. 💪🏼

Because taking care of myself helps me show up better for everything and everyone else I love. 💜

Strong body. Strong brain. Stronger me. 🧠

Always talk with your physician or qualified healthcare professional before beginning or significantly changing an exercise or strength training program, especially if you have an injury, concussion, neurological condition or other medical concern.

A headache being gone is a great sign, but feeling better doesn’t always mean you’re ready to jump right back into activity. 🧠

And this isn’t just about teenagers or competitive athletes. Whether you’re a youth athlete, high school or college athlete, weekend warrior, professional athlete, or simply someone ready to get back to exercise and the activities you love, returning after a concussion should be thoughtful and gradual.

Symptoms, balance, vision, cognitive function, and exercise tolerance can all be important pieces of the return to activity process.

The goal isn’t just getting you back. It’s getting you back safely.

Not sure if you’re ready to return to what you love? Begin your concierge journey with Raeven Health and receive personalized guidance to better understand your recovery and confidently navigate your return to activity.

What does sleep have to do with brain recovery? 🧠💤

A lot more than you might think!!!

While you sleep, your brain cycles through several stages, including light sleep, deep sleep and REM sleep. Each plays an important role in brain health and recovery.

One of the most restorative is N3 sleep, also known as deep or slow wave sleep.

During deep sleep, important restorative processes occur in the brain. Research also suggests that sleep supports the brain’s glymphatic system, which helps clear metabolic waste.

This can be especially important during brain recovery. Sleep disturbances are common following concussion and traumatic brain injury and may interfere with the recovery process.

And remember, it’s not only about how many hours you sleep.

Sleep quality matters too.

Want to better understand your sleep? Wearables such as an ŌURA or WHOOP can help track trends in total sleep, estimated deep sleep, REM sleep, HRV and recovery.

These devices are not a substitute for a medical sleep study, but they can help you recognize patterns over time.

Don’t obsess over one night’s score. Look at your trends.

Sleep isn’t just rest.

It’s an important part of brain recovery. 🧠💜

If you’ve followed me for a while, you know I’ve talked before about the relationship between our pets and brain health. 🐾💜

Physician expert work brought me to Fort Lauderdale this weekend, which also meant I got to sneak in some much-needed time with one of my rescue pups, Scuttle.

There’s a reason I keep coming back to this topic. Our animals give us companionship, connection, opportunities to move, and moments that can help us step away from the stress of everyday life.

As a Brain Injury Medicine physician, I talk a lot about the fundamentals of taking care of our brains: sleep, movement, nutrition, social connection, and managing stress. But brain health also lives in these simple, everyday moments that bring us joy.

For me, this weekend, that was getting some Scuttle time. 🐶💜

Never underestimate what a little time with an animal you love can do for your day and your brain.

Semax is an emerging area in brain health and something I’ve been reading quite a bit about lately.

While there isn’t a large body of human research behind it yet, I find the early science surrounding Semax and brain function incredibly interesting.

Semax is a synthetic peptide that has been studied for its potential effects on neuroplasticity, cognitive function, neuronal signaling, and neuroprotection.

One area that especially caught my attention is BDNF, or brain-derived neurotrophic factor. Preclinical research has shown that intranasal Semax can influence BDNF and related signaling pathways. BDNF plays an important role in learning, memory, neuroplasticity, and the brain’s ability to adapt.

There is also early human research. A small study of 24 healthy adults found measurable changes in brain-network activity following intranasal Semax. It’s intriguing, but larger human studies are still needed before we can draw conclusions about its clinical benefits.

Peptides may be trending right now for reasons that have little to do with brain health, but that isn’t what interests me most about them.

I’m finding the research surrounding certain peptides and their potential relationship to brain function, cognition, neuroplasticity, neurological recovery, and healthy aging particularly compelling. I think there is tremendous potential here, but I also believe in following the science without getting ahead of it.

There is still a lot we don’t know about Semax, including its long-term safety, optimal use, and clinical effectiveness. Semax is not FDA-approved in the United States.

As the research evolves, I’ll continue sharing what we’re learning about peptides and their potential role in brain health. 🧠

There are women who succeed, and then there are women who remind the rest of us that we can succeed by being entirely ourselves. Dolly Parton was one of those women. 💜

Her passing has had me thinking about what she represented far beyond the music.

As a woman in healthcare and business, so much about Dolly resonates with me. She dreamed big, worked incredibly hard, built businesses, gave generously, and somehow managed to do it all without losing who she was along the way.

She was feminine and formidable. Kind and incredibly smart. Ambitious and authentic. She showed us that none of those qualities ever had to compete with one another.

And maybe that is what resonates with me most.

So much of my work today, including what we are building and growing at Raeven Health, is rooted in the belief that you don’t have to follow the path that already exists. You can see something differently, believe there is a better way, and have the courage to build it.

But success, at least to me, has never been only about what you build. It’s also about what your work allows you to give to other people.

Dolly had an extraordinary ability to bring joy, comfort, laughter, and hope into people’s lives. I would like to think that, in a very different way, my work allows me to bring a little of that same light into someone else’s day, especially when that means helping someone navigate their brain health, recover from a brain injury, find the right care, or simply feel a little less overwhelmed by everything that comes with it.

There is something incredibly meaningful about knowing that the work you do can make another person’s journey just a little easier.

Maybe that’s one of the greatest measures of success: building something you believe in while leaving people a little better than you found them.

Dream big. Work hard. Give back. Support other women. Bring some joy along the way. And never lose the parts of yourself that made the dream yours in the first place.

Rest in peace, Dolly. 😇

Each month, the Raeven Health team brings a new perspective to the Raeven Review, our thought leadership series on the Raeven Health website, where we explore emerging research, evolving science, and important conversations across brain health, metabolic health, and whole person wellness.

This month, we’re taking a closer look at a topic receiving increasing attention in medicine:

GLP 1s and the Brain: Beyond Weight Loss 🧠💁🏻‍♀️

While GLP 1 medications are best known for their role in weight management, the conversation extends well beyond the scale. Emerging research is exploring their potential relationship with insulin signaling, inflammation, vascular health, cognitive health, and long term neurological resilience.

At Raeven Health, we believe understanding the connection between metabolic health and brain health is an important part of caring for the whole person. GLP 1 therapy is one tool within a much broader, individualized approach to health and longevity.

✨ Read the full article in the Raeven Review on our website: www.raevenhealth.com

Interested in learning whether GLP 1 therapy may be appropriate for you? Schedule an appointment with Raeven Health today for an individualized consultation.

A few of the many references behind this month’s discussion:

This content is provided for educational and informational purposes only and is not intended as medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. GLP 1 medications require physician oversight, individualized prescribing, and ongoing monitoring. Potential benefits and risks vary by patient, and emerging neurological research should not be interpreted as proof that GLP 1 medications prevent or treat cognitive decline or neurodegenerative disease.

💜 The Vagus Nerve & Nervous System Regulation

Brain health isn’t just about the brain 🧠 . It’s also about how the brain communicates with the rest of the body. ⚡️

The autonomic nervous system helps regulate many functions that happen automatically, including:

• Heart rate
• Breathing
• Digestion
• Blood pressure
• Sleep and arousal
• The body’s stress response

One important part of this system is the vagus nerve, a major communication pathway between the brain and many organs throughout the body. It plays a role in helping the body respond to internal signals and shift between states of activation and recovery.

I’ve been exploring noninvasive wellness technologies designed to interact with vagal pathways, including VeRelief Prime, a handheld vagus nerve stimulation device.

As we learn more about the relationship between the brain, nervous system, stress physiology, and overall wellness, I’m fascinated by tools that may complement the foundations of brain health

✨ Regular movement
✨ Consistent, restorative sleep
✨ Nourishing nutrition
✨ Meaningful social connection
✨ Stress management practices
✨ Time for rest and recovery

Technology doesn’t replace the basics, and no single device is a substitute for individualized medical care, but it may be one piece of a broader wellness picture.

I also think it’s important to approach emerging technologies with curiosity and appropriate caution. Research in this area is continuing, and individual experiences may vary. What feels helpful for one person may not be appropriate or beneficial for another.
