✨ Dysregulated children often lose access to language
✨ Big emotions can cause communication shutdown
✨ Pressure to “talk more” can increase frustration
✨ Children need support and models—not demands

Instead, we focus on:

Gestalt Language Processing IS
✨ a natural way some children develop language

Both neurotypical and neurodivergent children can learn language this way. Instead of starting with single words, gestalt language processors often acquire language in larger “chunks” or scripts before breaking them down into flexible, self-generated language over time.

There is no one “right” way to develop communication. Understanding HOW a child learns language helps us better support connection, regulation, and meaningful communication development 🌱

✏️ Understanding Early Pencil Grasps ✏️

Did you know children develop grasp patterns in stages as their fine motor skills grow?
👉 Fi**ed Grasp (Palmar Supinate Grasp)�Typically develops around 12–18 months.�The child holds the crayon with their whole fist, and movement comes mostly from the shoulder.
👉 Digital Pronate Grasp�Typically develops around 2–3 years.�The child begins using their fingers more, with all fingers pointing downward while movement comes from the shoulder and elbow.

These early grasps are important building blocks for later fine motor control, handwriting, coloring, and independence skills.

Joint attention in autistic children may look different than what we typically expect, and that’s important to understand.

We often think of joint attention as pointing, eye contact, or looking back and forth between a person and an object. But autistic children may share attention in more subtle, body-based, or movement-based ways.

✨ Moving closer to you to share what they’re looking at
✨ Pausing their actions to watch or listen to what you’re doing
✨ Handing you an item to show or direct you
✨ Leaning their body toward you
✨ Imitating something you’ve done

These moments still represent connection, awareness, and shared experience.

Joint attention does not have to look “typical” to be meaningful. When we learn to recognize and honor autistic communication styles, we create more opportunities for connection and regulation.

Communication doesn’t always look like talking. Before children use spoken language, they connect with us in many meaningful ways:
