Team Sally - No Stomach for Cancer Walk 2015

Team Sally - No Stomach for Cancer Walk 2015 Join my team to help No Stomach for Cancer raise awareness about Stomach cancer and its genetic components. Funds raised go towards research and publicity

I am hoping to raise funds for this organization to help fund research and awareness about this deadly form of cancer. Unfortunately, many people myself included, are unaware that if you have relatives with a cancer history, you should test for issues earlier. I was aware of it for breast cancer but really had not heard about it for other forms of cancer especially stomach cancer. My father died o

f stomach cancer in 1978 at age 54 and I've heard little about stomach cancer since. It's not very common in the United States, approximately 20,000 cases a year, and does not receive much media coverage. It is very common in Japan where they offer routine screenings for the disease. Though my family medical history was always listed on my medical forms no doctor ever suggested testing early (usually endoscopic investigation) for the disease or the associated gene. Now I am receiving excellent care at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York and feeling fine (OK I'm occasionally tired but don't really like to admit it). My siblings are being tested for the genetic link and my children will be too. Fortunately, if you know you have the genetic link (CDH1 gene mutation), there is a fix - stomach removal. The probability of stomach cancer in patients with the gene is very high 70-80% and reading about other cases I feel fortunate that didn't succumb to it until my 50's. Take a look at some of the case histories on the NoStomachForCancer.org website and you will see sad stories of kids in their 20's who died just six weeks after diagnosis. Unfortunately, hereditary diffuse gastric cancer is very difficult to detect even with early testing as the cancer lies between the inner and outer wall of the stomach and can only be caught if random biopsies pick it up during an endoscopy. Most people diagnosed in the USA have already advanced to stage 4. In Japan, patients are caught during an earlier phase of the disease where the cure rate is significantly higher. Learn more about gastric cancer at http://NoStomachforCancer.org and how it is working to make people more aware of early testing and funding research efforts.

Hmm...wondering which drug this is? My tumor is Met amplified and HER2 -ve. We did visit Mass Gen about a year ago and talk to them about trials. It's encouraging to see that some people are having great results.

I just wanted to thank everyone who supported the walk this year. To date we have raised $3,535 for No Stomach for Cancer which is thrilling. I was really pleased to see so many people turn up for the walk and show their support. It means so much to me and my family. I just had another chemo session on Friday, my 8th on the Folfox treatment and unfortunately I developed an allergic reaction to Oxaliplatin which is probably a result of the build up of the toxin in my body. Hopefully they will keep me on it and just give me the infusion over a much longer space of time. In December I will have another CTscan to see if it's working. Feels like it is, so I'm not too worried about that (yet)! Your support that's the best medicine.

On a related note, I apologize that the tax letters from Crowdrise have been going out in a half done manor. I have not been able to get into the program and make an adjustment but am talking to them and trying to sort it out so stay tuned.

A BIG thank you to everyone who joined us on the 2015 walk today.

Thank you to all who have already supported No Stomach For Cancer. With your help, we can bring awareness to this disease and find a cure. Hoping for a good turn out!

P.S. Yes, Gina there will be donuts!

FACTS AND NUMBERS:

(a) Stomach cancers are the fourth most common cancer types worldwide, and the second leading causes of cancer death in the world.

(b) It is estimated that there are 1 million new cases each year, and more than 800,000 deaths annually. There are over 20,000 cases in the USA each year and over 10,000 deaths.

(c) Recently, some types of stomach cancer have declined, while other types, which are more difficult to detect early and more deadly, are on the rise.

(d) Early stage stomach cancer rarely causes symptoms, making early detection very difficult.

(e) Lifestyle changes, such as smoking cessation and eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, can potentially reduce the risk of stomach cancer/all cancers.

(f) Getting tested and treatment for a common stomach bacteria known as H. pylori can decrease the risk of stomach cancer development.

(g) Know your family medical history and constantly update it. Hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC) is an inherited cancer syndrome that leads to an increased risk for both diffuse gastric cancer and lobular breast cancer. Patients who inherit the genetic (CDH1) mutation for HDGC are at high risk for developing gastric cancer at a young age.

(h) In the US, stomach cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths. It receives little funding by the federal government, because despite being a leading cause of cancer deaths, it is considered rare.
