How much does a funeral actually cost?

$1,000? $10,000? $100,000? Most families don’t really know until they’re suddenly the ones making the arrangements.

In this episode, Monica Lynne French, Legacy Advisor at Dignity Memorial, shares that costs can vary widely depending on the choices you make, and burial space may be an additional expense. She also brings up something many families never think about: if you choose cremation, what do you want your family to eventually do with your ashes?

🎙️ In this episode of The Caregiver Podcast – We Laugh So We Don’t Cry, we talk about funeral costs, cremation, planning ahead, and the decisions families are often left making while they’re grieving.

💜 Knowing your options ahead of time can mean fewer financial surprises and fewer difficult decisions for your family later.

Does choosing cremation mean you can’t still have a funeral or beautiful memorial service?

That’s a question many families have. Cremation doesn’t mean you have to give up the opportunity to gather, celebrate a life, or create a meaningful goodbye. The important part is deciding what YOU want and making sure your family knows those wishes ahead of time.

Mom may want to be buried. Dad may choose cremation. Either way, having those conversations now can help your family honor those wishes instead of trying to figure them out while they’re grieving.

🎙️ In this episode of The Caregiver Podcast – We Laugh So We Don’t Cry, Monica Lynne French, Legacy Advisor at Dignity Memorial, talks about cremation, burial, memorial services, and why pre-planning can give families clarity when the time comes.

💜 Cremation or burial is your choice. The important thing is making your wishes known.

When should you talk about your final wishes? Probably a lot earlier than you think.

Couples plan for weddings, homes, children, college, retirement, and finances. But some people can be married for decades and never have one important conversation: “What do you want when you die?”

Do you want to be buried or cremated? Does your spouse know? Do your children know? Or will the people you love someday be left trying to guess?

🎙️ In this episode of The Caregiver Podcast – We Laugh So We Don’t Cry, Monica Lynne French, Legacy Advisor at Dignity Memorial, explains why funeral and end-of-life planning conversations don’t have to wait until someone is older or seriously ill. In fact, talking about your wishes earlier can make the conversation easier because you’re not having it in the middle of a crisis.

💜 We plan for so many important moments in life. Why not also make a plan for the one thing none of us can avoid?

What happens when Mom dies and one sibling says, “She wanted to be cremated,” but another insists, “No, she wanted to be buried”?

You’re already grieving. Emotions are high. There may be unexpected funeral expenses. And now the family is arguing over a decision no one wanted to be making in the first place.

When final wishes haven’t been clearly discussed and planned ahead of time, disagreements between siblings can make an already painful loss even harder.

🎙️ In this episode of The Caregiver Podcast – We Laugh So We Don’t Cry, Monica Lynne French, Legacy Advisor at Dignity Memorial, talks about what can happen when siblings disagree over cremation or burial and why making your final wishes known ahead of time matters.

💜 Don’t leave your family guessing. Have the conversation while you can, so the people you love aren’t left trying to figure out what you would have wanted while they’re grieving.

WHO CHECKS ON THE CAREGIVER WHEN EVERYONE IS FOCUSED ON MOM OR DAD?

I recently asked 227 family caregivers in a dementia support group what they wish someone would ask them.

The answers weren’t complicated.

“I need sleep.”
“I need a break.”
“I need a few hours alone.”
“I wish someone would sit with Mom so I could get out.”
“I just want someone to ask how I’m doing.”

When someone is caring for a parent with dementia, it’s easy for all the attention to go to Mom or Dad. Meanwhile, the daughter, son, or spouse doing the caregiving can begin to feel exhausted, isolated, and forgotten.

If you know a family caregiver, don’t just say, “Call me if you need anything.”

Pick a day. Offer a specific time. Sit with their loved one. Bring dinner. Give them a chance to sleep, go for a walk, see a friend, or simply breathe.

Sometimes showing up for the caregiver is one of the best ways you can help the person they’re caring for, too.

If you’re caring for someone with dementia, what do YOU wish someone would ask you?

What happens to the family when Mom or Dad passes and suddenly everyone remembers their wishes differently?

One child says, “Mom promised me that.” Another feels they should receive more because they were the one doing the caregiving. Then, when it comes time to make final arrangements, one sibling says Mom wanted to be cremated, another says she wanted to be buried, and someone else says, “I don’t remember. We never talked about it.”

Those disagreements can become especially painful when a family is already grieving.

🎙️ In this episode of The Caregiver Podcast – We Laugh So We Don’t Cry, Monica Lynne French, Legacy Advisor at Dignity Memorial, talks about why having these conversations while Mom or Dad is still here can help prevent second-guessing, confusion, and family conflict later.

💜 The best time to talk about your wishes is before your family is forced to guess what they were.

Caregivers, please hear this: YOU CANNOT KEEP CARING FOR SOMEONE YOU LOVE IF YOU COMPLETELY STOP CARING FOR YOURSELF. 💗

Dolly Parton’s story is such a powerful reminder of something we see far too often in caregiving. When you love someone deeply, it is so easy to put their needs ahead of your own.

You skip the doctor’s appointment.
You tell yourself you’ll rest later.
You survive on a few hours of sleep.
You keep going because someone is depending on you.

But that stress and lack of sleep can take a very real toll on your health.

PLEASE TAKE THE BREAK. GET SOME SLEEP. ACCEPT THE HELP.

Even a few hours of respite can matter. You do not have to wait until you are completely exhausted to ask someone else to step in.

And if you are caring for a spouse, Mom, Dad, or someone else you love, follow us at .

Our goal with The Caregiver Podcast – We Laugh So We Don’t Cry is to give caregivers practical tools, expert guidance, real support, and yes, a little laughter to help make this journey just a little easier.

You spend so much time taking care of everyone else.

Please don’t forget to take care of you, too. 💗

Follow and share this with a caregiver who may need this reminder today.

IT’S OUT NOW! 🎙️💜

What happens when Mom or Dad’s final wishes aren’t clear and the family is suddenly left to make those decisions?

One sibling thinks Mom wanted to be cremated. Another remembers something completely different. Everyone is grieving, emotions are high, and now the family has to make decisions they may have never talked about.

Our newest episode of The Caregiver Podcast – We Laugh So We Don’t Cry is officially LIVE!

We sat down with Monica Lynne French, Legacy Advisor with Dignity Memorial, for an important conversation about funeral pre-planning, burial versus cremation, costs, veteran benefits, and how talking about your wishes BEFORE a crisis can help prevent unnecessary stress and conflict between siblings.

Monica said something that really captures the heart of this conversation:

“You’re honoring somebody, a life that’s been lived.”

Planning ahead is about giving your family clarity during one of the hardest moments of their lives. It gives you the opportunity to make your wishes known and leaves fewer difficult decisions for the people you love to make while they’re grieving.

It’s not just planning for the end. It’s caring for your family ahead of time.

If you have aging parents, siblings, or a family of your own, this is one of those conversations worth having before you need to have it.
