Ruths annual TRUNK OR TREAT -This event was started by Ruth Peck Savino who sadly passed away in October of 2021 as she wanted to find a way to keep the kids off the street as she felt it was so dangerous for them to be walking in town especially in that we do not have sidewalks and the majority of the town has no street lights. Plus find a way to help the cemetery where she is now buried.

OUR TRUNK N TREAT PROJECT IS TO RAISE FUNDS TO RETORE STONES WITHIN THE WESTERLO RURAL CEMETERY
The Westerlo Rural Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in NYS! We have burials prior to 1800 and from all wars including heroes from the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam , Iraq and Afghanistan as well as many peace time Veterans. Not only that many local families and friends are buried here and we currently cover over 13 acres of land. We are one of the few old cemeteries who still have land to expand.
Stones are the responsibilities of the families of the deceased, but with the age of our cemetery many of these families are sadly disappearing and there is no one to take care of the decaying stones. We have been doing restoration using our volunteers, led by our caretaker who has spent a lot of money out of pocket. We need special lifts to raise the stones (some are too big and we will have to contract out), as well as special cleaners that will no damage the different types of stone materials. Therefore we are trying to raise money to help purchase these items. So you know, NYS has EVERY MEMBERSHIP CEMETERY (many are not - including local cemeteries) place money from the sale of plots into special accounts that we do not have access to for this type project for and we still need to buy and repair mowers, pay someone to mow and pay state mandated insurances as well as the NYS fees.
Therefore every year on the Saturday prior to Halloween we do a Trunk n Treat for ALL ages at the Westerlo Town Park- our folks who set up their cars they pay for all decorations and donated candy they hand out. We have prizes for the best decorated car determined by the adults attending!
We are also on Facebook (Westerlo Rural Cemetery) where you can find dates of future events including spring cleanup when we need lots of volunteers to make our Cemetery remain one of the best looking old cemeteries in the State! Donations are welcome and very much appreciated.
