Creating a space that supports recovery doesn’t mean finding a new place. It means reducing the reminders and routines connected with substance use wherever you currently live or stay.

Objects, contacts, familiar patterns, and digital content can become triggers—especially during early recovery. Start with what you can safely change:

1. Clear out anything used to use
2. Remove the leftovers of the old lifestyle
3. Delete the contacts that pull you back
4. Change the routine that led to using
5. Keep reminders of your progress and reasons to stay on track visible

You don’t need control over your entire environment. Removing even one trigger and keeping one reason for recovery in sight can help create space for a different choice.

If anything may be unsafe to handle or difficult to address alone, ask a trusted person, recovery peer, or treatment professional for help.

There’s a name for the way the mind can play tricks: euphoric recall.

It’s when your memory keeps only the good parts of the past and quietly edits out the rest — the pain, the cost, the fallout.

Notice it, name it, and you take its power back.

When a feeling knocks you sideways, run a quick HALT check first.

Are you Hungry? Angry? Lonely? Tired?

More often than you’d think, the fix is smaller than the feeling. Name it, meet the need, then decide what’s next.

Good recovery care isn’t one-size-fits-all. It meets the whole person — the medical side, the mental-health side, and the real life you’re going back to.

That’s how we built care here in central Ohio: steady support, real connection, and a team that treats substance use and co-occurring mental health together.

If you’re weighing options for yourself or someone you love, reach out to our team. We’re here, and we’ll talk it through.

Loving someone in recovery can blur the line between helping and enabling. Steady support looks like showing up — not smoothing over every hard moment for them.

A few things that help: offer encouragement without taking over, set boundaries that are kind and clear (and then keep them), and look after your own well-being too. You matter in this, not only as someone's support person.

Supporting a loved one is its own kind of work. You don't have to get it perfect to get it right.

A craving feels permanent in the moment — but it isn't.

Next time one hits, don't white-knuckle it:
Name it ("this one will pass").
Delay, and take ten slow breaths.
Move — a walk, some water, a change of rooms.
Then reach out to your person.

Cravings crest and fade. You just have to outlast the wave.

Some of the most useful recovery tools are just honest questions. When the day feels foggy or heavy, slow down and ask yourself three.

How am I really doing? What do I need right now? Who can I reach out to?

You don't have to fix everything the answers turn up. Just naming them — honestly, without judgment — is often enough to point you toward the next right move.

Some days, "forever" is too big to carry.

When the future feels overwhelming, shrink the horizon. You don't have to stay well for the rest of your life today — you just have to get through today. And if today is too much, get through the next hour. One day at a time isn't just a slogan; it's a strategy for when your mind is trying to solve everything at once.

Do the next right thing. Then do it again tomorrow.

When someone you love is in recovery, it's easy to pour everything into them and nothing into yourself. But you can't run on empty.

Set a boundary and keep it. Rest without guilt. Your steadiness — the fact that you're still standing, still here — is part of their recovery, and yours matters just as much.

Take care of you, too.

Recovery isn't only the big anniversaries. It's the ordinary wins that stack up quietly:

A full night's sleep. A hard conversation handled sober. A craving that came, and passed, and didn't win.

None of it makes headlines. All of it is proof you're doing the work. Notice those moments — they're worth celebrating.
