When routines change, anxiety often shows up as “What if?” thinking.

What if I can’t keep up?
What if something goes wrong?
What if I make the wrong decision?

Trying to answer every “what if” can turn into a cycle of overthinking without actually making you feel more prepared.

When you catch yourself trying to solve a future problem that hasn’t happened, shift the question:

“What actually needs my attention today?”

You don’t need to solve the entire semester, workweek, or transition at once. Focus on what is in front of you and allow some uncertainty about what comes next.

Emotional regulation doesn’t mean staying calm all the time.

It means recognizing what’s happening internally before the emotion makes the decision for you.

When you notice yourself getting activated, try asking:

“What do I need right now—and what response will actually help?”

Sometimes the answer is to speak up. Sometimes it’s to set a boundary. Sometimes it’s to wait until the intensity comes down before responding.

The goal isn’t to eliminate difficult emotions. It’s to create enough space to respond intentionally rather than automatically.

Strong emotions often come with strong urges.

Anger may push you to send the text.
Anxiety may push you to avoid.
Feeling overwhelmed may push you to shut down.
Embarrassment may push you to over-explain.

The urge can feel immediate, but that does not mean it needs to become your response.

A helpful question is:

“What is this emotion pushing me to do, and will that actually help?”

That small check can create enough space to choose a response that fits your goals instead of reacting automatically.

Your first urge is not always your best response.

Pause. Notice. Choose.

This Week’s Post: Emotional Regulation

Emotional regulation is not about ignoring your emotions. It’s about learning what to do when they show up.

One simple strategy is the 90-second pause:

• Notice what you’re feeling
• Name the emotion
• Notice what your body is doing
• Ask yourself: “What does this feeling make me want to do?”
• Before acting, ask: “Will that response actually help?”

That small pause can create space between an emotion and a reaction.

You can feel angry without sending the text.
You can feel anxious without avoiding the situation.
You can feel overwhelmed without trying to solve everything at once.

The goal isn’t to control every emotion. It’s to have more control over what you do next.

Emotional regulation isn’t about never getting angry, anxious, overwhelmed, or upset.

It’s about learning how to notice what you’re feeling, slow down the automatic reaction, and choose what you want to do next.

A few reminders:

• Strong emotions can feel urgent without actually requiring an immediate response.
• Naming the emotion can help create some distance from it.
• Taking even a few seconds before reacting can change what happens next.
• Feelings are important information, but they don’t always need to become instructions.

Emotional regulation is a skill, and like any skill, it improves with practice.

This month, I’ll be sharing more practical strategies for understanding and managing emotions.
