West Nile virus has been detected in a mosquito pool collected at the North Avenue site in Westport. This is Westport’s first positive mosquito finding of the 2026 season. No human cases have been reported in Connecticut at this time.

Residents are encouraged to take precautions: use EPA-registered insect repellent, wear protective clothing, repair window and door screens, and empty standing water around the home at least once a week.

🚨 Cyclospora Outbreak Update

The FDA is investigating a multistate outbreak of Cyclospora infections linked to recalled shredded iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms de Mexico.

The recall includes select Marketside® Iceberg Salad and Shredded Lettuce products sold at Walmart with Best if Used By dates between July 18 and August 3, 2026.

What you should do:
🥬 Do not eat recalled iceberg lettuce.
🗑️ Throw it away or return it to the place of purchase for a refund.
🧼 Clean and sanitize any surfaces or containers the lettuce touched.
🍴 If you’re eating out, ask where the restaurant’s iceberg lettuce was sourced.

Symptoms of Cyclospora infection may include:
• Diarrhea
• Stomach cramps
• Bloating
• Nausea
• Fatigue
• Loss of appetite
• Weight loss
• Headache or fever

If you’ve eaten recalled lettuce and develop symptoms, contact your health care provider.

Connecticut is among the states where the recalled product was distributed. The FDA’s investigation is ongoing, and additional information may become available.

Cyclospora is a parasite that can spread through contaminated food, most commonly fresh produce.

You can help reduce your risk by:
✔️ Washing your hands before and after handling produce
✔️ Rinsing fruits and vegetables under running water
✔️ Refrigerating cut produce promptly
✔️ Practicing food and water safety when traveling

If you experience prolonged diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, or fatigue after eating contaminated food, contact your healthcare provider.

Remember: Washing produce helps reduce the risk, but it may not remove the parasite completely.

Air Quality Alert 🚨

Wildfire smoke from Canada is impacting air quality across Connecticut.

Smoke can irritate your eyes, nose, throat, and lungs, and may worsen symptoms for people with asthma, heart disease, or other respiratory conditions. Children, older adults, pregnant women, and those with underlying heart or lung conditions should take extra precautions.

To reduce your exposure:
• Limit prolonged or strenuous outdoor activities
• Keep windows and doors closed
• Run your air conditioner on the recirculate setting, if available
• Move outdoor exercise indoors when possible
• Monitor for symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, or chest tightness

Stay informed by checking current air quality conditions at AirNow.gov or the Connecticut DEEP Air Quality Index webpage.
