Practice, practice, practice!

Everything we practice in alignment gives us confidence in our movement. When it comes to development, learning how to trust the body comes from feeling secure and steady.

Here, Enzo and I are playing AND practicing sit to stand. With each reach forward, he is trusting his legs can support the rest of his body. And with each stand to sit, he is learning to trust and control the muscles needed to sit.

Today, I celebrate 15 years as a licensed physical therapist! Oh what a journey!

I love that I chose to stay and push through.
I get to live a life I am fully aligned with and I think little me would be so darn proud.

I would love to know what you would add to this if we have worked together 💗

Roman is sitting so well and exploring ways to move into and out of this position. With every milestones, we want to first consider the HOW.

For any movement to provide the best alignment for developing bones, muscles, and joints, we need to look at HOW the muscles are working together.

Are they in synergy or is one muscle group taking over?

Early intervention physical therapy is not a check list of movements. It is a way to build a strong foundation for overall neuromuscular and skeletal development through functional play.

Connection and presence! Necessary to build a strong neural network for brain and movement development.

I love working on side sitting transitions. We can practice so many movements from sitting to crawling and to pull to standing.

It’s a whole body and brain + nervous system work out. It helps build strength and connections between both sides of the brain and connects different levels of the body together to form a complex movement. A lot of the times, working on these complex movements makes activities like all fours and standing easier.

Joy + Play.

A playful environment is what primes the brain and nervous system to learn, explore, and grow. Play allows the body to feel safe and confident to try new and challenging activities.

Every child is unique and deserves the time and space to be seen.

Trusting that our legs and whole body can support us on uneven surfaces like grass, sand, hills, and any uneven path is a skill to learn. It’s important for safety and independence.

Practicing while lost in play is a way to build stronger neural pathways between our brain and the rest of our body. When we are playing our movements are different. They’re more fluid and coordinated.

Functional play is more than just checking off a list of developmental milestones. We need to make it fun and add challenge so that the nervous system can learn and build strong connections between all areas involved in movement.
