Seventeen years.

It's strange to think that I've now spent 17 years living with pain every single day.

I was only 25 years old when autoimmune hepatitis changed my life.

There wasn't one dramatic moment where everything stopped. Instead, it slowly became my new normal.

Pain became normal.

Fatigue became normal.

Canceling plans became normal.

Learning to smile when people asked, "How are you?" became normal.

Living with an invisible disability is traumatic in its own way.

You grieve the life you thought you were going to have while trying to build a new one. You learn that people often judge what they can see, while your biggest battles happen where no one else can.

For a long time, I didn't talk much about it.

Part of that was because I didn't want my diagnosis to become my identity.

Part of it was because I was busy surviving.

I'm not looking for sympathy.

I know I'm not the only one quietly fighting a battle that most people will never see.

If sharing my journey helps even one person feel a little less alone, then it's worth telling.

This is just the beginning.
